It varies from moment to moment
Hey y'all!

So we've got this Barred Rock pullet from a farm store bin a while ago, but my dad seems to think it might not be a Barred Rock but some other breed that got chucked in there. I disagree, but I'm no expert so--

What's y'all's opinion on this chicken?

FYI, it has a straight comb and if you need leg color I can get that too.

Why does he not think it is?
It is barred. You say it has a single comb.
Does it have yellow or yellow with black wash legs? Clean legs no feathers? If so I would say it's a BR.

I honestly don't really know, lol. I guess he thinks the barring doesn't look as clean as it does on our cockerel and apparently that's enough variation for him to bring ID into question? 🤷‍♂️

Yep to all of the above.

That's what I figured. Thanks.
Appreciate your input, man.

It looks pretty much like my barred rock which I got from a hatchery. You can see mine here in the middle of the picture, she was 17 weeks when this was taken.

🤣 I think it's a BR but let him think it's not. Dads like to be right.

I think it's a barred rock too. He may be confused because male barred rocks are double barred, but females can only ever be single barred. The barring gene is only found on the male Z chromosome, roosters are ZZ and hens are ZW. Since males have two Z chromosomes, they can have up to two copies of the barring gene. Two copies causes wider white stripes than one copy. So male and female barred rocks should have slightly different stripe patterns.

Oh wow, ok. Thank you!

That makes a lot of sense.

I used to be such a serious chicken nerd lol. I've forgotten so much 😅
