Hatchery RIRs vs. private breeder RIRs?

I believe one line stands out that most RIR breeders have are the Mohawk lines....I wish there is a link on all the important flock farms that made an impact on the RIRs.

I have to agree with the real old timers standards...if you want to buy the real thing, go with someone that is dedicated to the breed, not the hatchery.

Same for the Dark RIR's too that I have seen some hatcheries selling!

Quote:
1) Hatcheries don't claim to sell birds that are up to the Standard of Perfection, just birds that are (or are really close to) the breed they say they are.
2) Hatchery RIRs are generally RIRs and not hybrids; they're just not up to the SOP b/c they're bred mostly for production.
3) Hatchery stock is usually more unpredictable in temperament because they are bred for production rather than show, handling, etc.

Exactly right-back in the early middle 1900s Red breeding essentially took 2 seperate paths- 1 path preserved the breed standard not too concerned with production, the other path worked to increase production w/o concerning themselves much with standard breed characteristics.
Some earlier breeders did both & had some fantastic looking Reds that laid well. The 2 ends need not be mutually exclusive. If egg laying aility is one of the things you cull for there's no reason why show type Reds couldn't be redeveloped to lay 350 eggs a year.
