Our first RIR was a pretty good example, I think: nice dark feathers and a squareish, tall body..... but I've seen lots of hatchery "RIR"s that look like NHRs with a fatter, squatter body and more light red feathers.....

Of this list, does anyone have experience with RIRs?
Cackle Hatchery
Mt. healthy
Murray McMurray
Welp
Ridgway

Thanks!!

I agree if you are looking for good representations of any breed, you can't go wrong with Sandhill Preservation. They actually raise the birds there unlike many hatcheries that buy eggs from suppliers so you never really know what you are getting. One order may be excellent and another one may not be up to snuff. I got my RIRs from TSC who ordered them from Ideal. Very nice layers but really a Production Red.

I recently recieved a catalog from Welp Hatchery, they make the destinction between production reds and the RIR, so they may have APA standard birds. I have never purchased from them so I can not say for sure.

Yeah, you guys are right.... but there's no way we can order from Sand Hill.. straight run and minimum order just doesn't work whn you only need 2 or 3 chicks!!

Someday when I have my farm, I will definitely be doing that, but for now, just looking for the best from the regular production hatcheries!

Thanks

I ordered mine from macmurray Hatcheries, and i ordered them already sexed, only problem i had to order 25 when i only wanted 10, You might call your local high school and ask if they have a 4 H program and if any of the members have RIR. My hens are really Nice, big red chickens, but my roos have beautiful green iridescence feather in their tail, still love them and they are really big. Hens lay large brown eggs.

Owned by 12 RIRs, 1 pitt bull,1 poodle mix,1 yorkie, and 1 crabby gray cat.
