Hatchery Rooster **TELL ME THE TRUTH**

Okay so we knew all along that our chicks might not be "pure" or that we might have substitutions. So we are not upset but we are pretty sure that our rooster is not a Australorp because he is not all black

And, I wish I had a better picture because he is thicker than he looks in this shot, I guess it is the angle

So what do you guys think? Sex-link, maybe??

We really don't mind except now I am worried that it he is that some of his parents traits might start to show up in his offspring (barring and the like)

He is a beautiful creature and has the BEST deep crow ever!

Honestly, I am seeing these birds more and more.

It seems as though either the hatcheries have breeder birds that have the birchen gene OR they are indeed mixing breeds together. The bird has the typical look of a hatchery Australorp but just different colors (birchen) are showing up.

Yeah, he definitely does look like some sort of mix... almost like australorp with some wyandotte coloring on the neck... I wouldn't say sex link though, because he's be a lot more black, he wouldn't have all that white. he's a very gorgeous rooster though

The picture also makes his legs seem lighter than they are, they are usually very black looking...

but I am wondering about the birchen gene myself. That is what I keep coming back to in my research... I plan to find another rooster from a quality stock in the fall.
