I was wondering If hatchery welsummers layed fairly dark eggs or not. Which hatchery has the darkest laying. Thanks in advance.

It is crap shoot when you get some from the hatchery. If you want the real thing, order some from the BYCers in here or the WCNA breeders and you would not be disappointed.

Thanks for the reply I researched a little more after posting this and decided against getting hatchery stock.

I do not have any pictures of the wheaten marans up yet. I only have a picture of the rooster so far.

I do not ship sexed welsummers, I could, but the price would be higher, and there is NO guarantee by sexing with facial markings. I dont think you will find any backyard breeder that will sell day old sexed welsummer chicks. Like I said, I can, but the price would be higher, and no refund given if not sexed correctly with facial markings.

Thanks. I understand that it would cost more for sexed chicks and that you couldn't guarantee it.

I asked because it is easier to sex Welsummers than most breeds. You can pm me with a price if you want.

How is the egg color on your Wheaten Marans?

But, the facial sexing on welsummers in not 100% true, it does vary by line(s), etc... There are distinct markings on the face, but I cannot be 100% sure that it would be all females.

The egg color on the marans is pretty good from what I saw with the eggs they were hatched from. None of them have actually laid for me yet. My rooster is coming 2 years. And all of my other rosoters and hens are 3 months - 6 months old.

I agree with Nate, the face markings isn't all that 100 percent reliable.

Always order MORE on straight run so you can at least get a trio of Welsummers to start off from.

Yes definately! This year I hatched out over 150 Welsummer, and culled down to 20 hens and 5 roosters. If something is not breedable, do not breed it, as if it has bad traits, they are harder to breed out than, than to not put them in the gene pool at all. But of course, if you only have 1 rooster, and he has a small flaw, then it would be ok, but you would have to let buyers know he would have a flaw, and could produce what his flaw is. Otherwise it is best to use only the best of the best for breeding.
