hatching 10/19 - 10/20 ????

Dawn,

How is putting the egg cartons inside the incubator working for ya? Does it keep the eggs moist during the hatches or something?

Hi Tommy,
Honestly, I'll NEVER go back to hatching on their sides.
The advice I give new hatchers is FIRST that I'm NO Expert.. and that 2nd.. in a dozen or two hatches of my own, AND all the reading on BYC... I have concluded that eggs hatch best in the position they were incubated

So if you hand turn eggs on their sides, leave them that way for hatch.
I use a turner so for me it makes sense to put them in cartons

My main reason is that I no longer get stuck chicks, or chicks who pip the wrong end of the shell and no more drownings... which happened EVERY hatch prior to using the carton method.

Added: also.. it keeps the bator A LOT cleaner. They just pop out like jack in the boxes..

It's a little crowded in there with an egg flat.. next time I'll use two rows of egg cartons around the perimeter so they have more room in the middle to get out and about. I had to pull the first 14 out RIGHT at the point when #14 hatched because #15 was pipped and ready to zip and I wanted to get that bator open & closed before #15 could make a good hole in his egg.

I LOVE it.. and am always so happy now with this method.

well my hatch is officially over. the last chick pipped but never zipped or anything. i am guessing he hit a blood vessel or something since the egg was full of blood and he hadn't fully absorbed the yolk yet either. i only got 1 baby out of 11 eggs. but... i have 9 due to hatch 11/3 and 6 due to hatch 11/11. then on top of my eggs in the bator i found my white hen has 18 eggs laid so far and not sitting yet so who knows what i will have by this time next month. lol

or

?
From what I understand, its

right?

Anyhow, in regards to all that you mentioned, I usually get 97-100% hatch rate all the time just letting them lay flat on one side!!! Haha. But you are saying its better when its standing up like when its on the turner?...hummm

I am not too sure but I'll give it a shot since it works for you! The reason why it caught my attention in the first place is that its simply a "carton" which means it might be able to hold in the moisture better for hatching

Thanks for sharing!

No one is can claim to be "expert"...we all need to learn from one another and we just share what we know best!

Hi Tommy,
Well, I'm saying it's better for me for sure.
You don't want the carton to get wet or anything so I have to be careful about that.. I cut the bottoms of the egg cartons open and am careful of how full the reservoir is to be sure the carton doesn't soak up any water.

I learned this 'trick' from many BYC'ers last year. But there are also MANY BYC'ers who are strictly against it.

I think if your hatches are great already, then keep on doing what your doing of course! in other words, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

"If it ain't broken, don't try to fix it"

I like that! Haha

Dawn, great. I see. Do you happen to link to those articles who folks who are against it? I just wonder why : )

Thanks
