Hi Tommy,
Honestly, I'll NEVER go back to hatching on their sides.
The advice I give new hatchers is FIRST that I'm NO Expert.. and that 2nd.. in a dozen or two hatches of my own, AND all the reading on BYC... I have concluded that eggs hatch best in the position they were incubated
So if you hand turn eggs on their sides, leave them that way for hatch.
I use a turner so for me it makes sense to put them in cartons
My main reason is that I no longer get stuck chicks, or chicks who pip the wrong end of the shell and no more drownings... which happened EVERY hatch prior to using the carton method.
Added: also.. it keeps the bator A LOT cleaner. They just pop out like jack in the boxes..
It's a little crowded in there with an egg flat.. next time I'll use two rows of egg cartons around the perimeter so they have more room in the middle to get out and about. I had to pull the first 14 out RIGHT at the point when #14 hatched because #15 was pipped and ready to zip and I wanted to get that bator open & closed before #15 could make a good hole in his egg.
I LOVE it.. and am always so happy now with this method.
