Hatching buddy? Set today, due May 18th

Cool sounds like everyone is doing good.
In just a few weeks we will all be covered in fuzzy butts.

I have a question for you more experienced hatchers. It's been pretty cool here (40-70 degrees F), could this end up being a delayed hatch? The coop has been around 60 degrees average I believe. I just read that cooler temps can cause eggs to develop slower than normal and since I'll be candling today (day 7) I wanted to see if I could get eggs that look a little behind

ETA: Just finished candling and things look the same. 2 viable, and 4 that I'm pretty sure are infertile. All I could see were yolks and air cells. Ah well! Anything above a 0% hatch rate I'll consider a success

. I wasn't planning on keeping the chicks anyway, so that's one less thing to worry about. And it'll give Molly more of a reason to accept the day old hatchery chicks I'm getting on her due date!

When should I take the infertiles out of the nest? They didn't look bubbly or smell bad that I remember, but I'm planning on leaving mama and the eggs alone from now until the next week and I'm not sure she's going to kick the bad ones out. What do you think?

If you know they are infertile then take them out now. No reason to keep them there. You should be seeing things by now (blood vessels). Also as far as the weather, they should still hatch at a normal time. The momma is keeping them at the correct temp. I have had broodies hatch at 21 days in the dead of winter.

wow there are so many posts on this forum that is hard to find this one.

Dad took out the temp pen and moved the hutch a bit that Mrs. Grumpy is in. She moved over a bit from her spot as most of the pine shavings have fallen through to the tray below. Was gonna add more to fluff up her nest for her and realized I was out of pine shavings.

Well I had one of those cat pads that help hold body heat already in a flannel pillow case. (blue with cute sheep on it) So I put that in her corner spot and put her on it with her eggs then scattered some of the shavings around her. She fussed and then settled comfortably in her new cushioned spot.

Little One has been eyeing Mrs. Grumpy as the new nest suddenly looks alluring. I think the other hens are a bit jealous as I am only letting Mrs. Grumpy brood. Alice decided to go broody and I am working on trying to break her. She is so stuborn. Only got 3 eggs today from the last 3 hens that have not tried to go broody yet.

Woohoo! Day 8 is coming to a close over here. I'm going to leave the two viable eggs alone and candle the others on day 14. Molly's doing great, didn't take her off the nest today but she didn't eat or drink much so I'll take her out tomorrow.

Pekin ducks:) My first try at ducks but it all seems to be going well. They are from my MIL's ducks, so I don't have to worry about shipping.

Oh CUTE. I'd love to have ducklings :3

And yes, Molly is very serious, but surprisingly sweet as well! She has never pecked even though I mess with her so much. And I try giving her treats or coax her to eat while she's sitting but she just fluffs up and gives me the stink-eye, LOL
