Feeling bummed this morning. Another hatched but had some issues. The chick that was still in the bator attacked it and ripped the cord off hard enough to pull some of it's inside out. The poor thing was also having what appeared to be siezures so we culled it as it was in alot of pain and could not function.

Mom took out the chick that attacked it and she is in the brooder with the other healthy babies.

Another egg started to zip at the same time as the one that did not make it and seemed to be stuck. Worried it could be shrink wrapped I carefully began to help it. Well it was not shrink wrapped, it was just too big to move! Got the big baby free and candled the last 2 eggs. The last 2 eggs were no good.

Dad made the joke of calling the big baby Baby Huey. She is already as big as the ones that hatched 2 days ago. Huey's toes were curled up but this morning she had them straight. She is still very wobbly. Hope she makes it as I don't want to loose another one. That was just too hard.

Huey is with her sisters in the brooder now. This batch had some rough spots; however, the babies that made it are looking happy n healthy and are so sweet.

Well, I'm having a very disappointing hatch so far. Last night I went into lockdown and had to pull 6 more eggs. That means I'm down to 6 out of 24 on my shipped eggs. VERY bummed about that. The two form my flock are looking great, I just hope I get something from these Silkie eggs - if not I'm buying locally next time.

We went into "lockdown" yesterday with Molly and her two eggs...but I forgot to candle them to make sure they're alright. I last checked them on day 14 and they looked great so I'm hoping all goes well :S

How do you tell if the eggs are good at this point when you can't really see in the egg? Smell them? See if development halted or if there's no movement? Should I just leave the eggs alone and see what happens? GAH I'm so anxious!

Boy am I joining this hatch group late! Haven't been able to get on the computer much.

Anyway, I have a pair of black mottled banty cochins (sisters) that both went broody at the same time. They didn't have anything to sit on at first, but I started getting fertile eggs from a different hen and decided to let them have those. I didn't want to get carried away and end up with more than I can handle, if they even hatch, so I only gave them 2 eggs, one each. I also had 2 duck eggs that I got from a friend, so I gave those to them, as well. Turned out that 1 duck egg was a dud, and the other must have been sat on before I got it because it had a blood ring and the embryo was more developed than it should have been at that point. Oh well. The other 2 were growing well. The girls are sharing a nest and take turns on the eggs while the other gets out for a bit. It's so cute!

I candled them again at day 15, and they seemed to still have a lot of fluid in them, with the chicks filling maybe half the egg. Does that sound about right? I was able to see one foot, which was really cool! So, they should hatch on the 19th. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I am freaking out. This is my first hatch ever and I'm using a hen that went broody. Today is day 21.

1. I could not see anything when I tried to candle the eggs so I am just hoping for the best.
2. I set 10 eggs under her and about a week later she had 11. I guess she is still laying, I thought they stopped. anywho-should I not count on that egg hatching?
3. Last night I went out and put a few to my ear to see if I could hear some peeping, and I heard nothing. Also, one of them seemed like it had something hard in there, it was moving around when I gave it a gentle shake, not sure how to explain it.
4. how long should I give them all to hatch?? especially since she layed at least one after I put the set under her? Should I try to totally take her off the nest later tonight to see what's happening under her? she is pretty grumpy when I touch her.

I have a buff orph setting on the eggs. I have a Polish rooster so I'm looking forward to what we get, if any......I'm trying hard to remain calm.
