I just got my first incubator in the mail. It is the Brinsea Mini. I can't decide on which type of biddies to hatch. Which ones are the best egg layers and are pretty enough for a fair competition. You see, my daughter's a big fan on fair competitions. Last year she did Americanas. She won 4th place. She wants to try some different ones this time. It's only July, and the fair is in October. Please help.
Thanks for your help,
Kara

Sounds awesome!

Do you want friendly and good layers? Just friendly? The rarest or most beautiful?

Cochins, both bantam and standard, are friendly, come in a variety of colors, and lay pretty well, though are prone to going broody.
Plymouth Rocks do come in bantam size
Old Enligsh Game bantams come in a ton of colors, are friendly, and very good at foraging
Silkies don't lay well, but are certainly show stoppers
Bantam brahmas are said to be tame, good layers, and beautiful
Speckled Sussex are beautiful, friendly and good layers
Polish are famous ornamental birds that also lay well
Australorps and Orpingtons are both friendly, hardy, pretty, and excellent layers

And there are many others. I hope this helps!

Thanks so much. I decided to hatch 4 or 5 eggs. Do you happen to know any places locally I can get eggs? I live in Alabama. Im going with 2 Silkies and 2 Rhode Islands or Bantam Brahmas.
