Ann, I see you have Barnevelders. How do they lay? Are the eggs fairly dark? I have some hatchery Welsummers and Marans and just put some marans eggs in the bator. I might be interested in some later this spring. I'm in Buena Vista, CO.

The Barnevelders lay a really large egg. I have seven hens and I am getting 4-5 eggs most days. I would say that they lay pretty dark egg but not like a Maran.

i have Buckeyes. is that a branevelder hen in the pic? i will have to google them, haven't heard much about them. we just love our Buckeyes to pieces. PM me if you would be interested in trading eggs to enhance our Buckeye bloodlines. the kids and I would love to get other breeds, but i think DH is done building new pens for a while. The Buckeyes get to free-range...

Do you plan to have Barnevelder eggs later on this spring and summer? If so, I might be interested in picking up some. My brother lives in Kiowa, CO and we could coordinate a visit with him and an egg pick-up.

Yes. I should have eggs for a while. I don't keep my birds separted all summer so the end of May or early June I open all of the coops and let everyone free range together for the summer and fall. I separate them again in the winter. Most will go back to their own coop however when they are out all together then anything goes so no longer pure breeds. Check with me when it gets close to the time for your trip.
