The egg shape tale is actually the worst of the old wives' tales I've ever heard. People were actually making fun of that back in the 19th century. If you read The History of the Hen Fever published in 1855, the author totally pokes fun of people for believing it.

A more interesting one is this one my great-grandma used to use: Tie a red string to a wedding ring and hold it over the egg. If it swings clockwise, it's male, if counterclockwise, it's female. Now, mind you, it only works if you have "the gift"

seriousbill....you are close with that technique. But, the clincher is you need to find out what response your pendulum gives you for a female vs male. Therefore, try it on a hen and compare the result to that of a rooster.
For me, the clockwise spin is female; counterclockwise spin is male. For other people, the pendulum moves east-west or north-south to determine gender.
I have 2 roosters in my flock. I used my pendulum to select 2 eggs fertilized by my black Jersey giant. One "male" and one "female". The eggs were slipped under a broody hen. The "female" egg got cracked and was tossed and the "male" hatched. Yep, it's boy and it's daddy is the JG.

In defence to you, I believe whatever method,be it old wives tales or not, if you believe or are even curious that it might work, then do it. If you have tried this method or thinking about trying it, then please let me know of your outcome. Good luck !!!!
