Last year after reading plenty of success stories about this 'homemade' method, i thought id give it a try....i put 5 eggs in a fish tank with a heat pad and a bowl of water (for the humidity) and away we went. it went well until the last week where we had a huge heat spike which killed 4 of the 5 chicks/eggs. last egg hatched on the 22nd day, seemed to struggle but got out the egg. sadly the following day it died.

i really would like to try this method again as i cant afford a really egg incubator and have plenty of heat pads/aquariums here to try again with but am unsure what caused the heat spike or where i went wrong ast time...

has anyone ever tried this method, with success who could give me some pointers?????

Can't say I've tried it, maybe someone else can help:) I purchased an LG still-air incubator for $40. Eventually added the egg-turner and fan. Even without the egg-turner and fan, still had a decent hatch. Perhaps you could save up for the $40? Or purchase a used one?

I rented an incubator from the local county extension office for free.
Maybe your extension office does this too?

have no idea what an extention office is (am in belgium) and have tried looking for 'cheap' incubators, but they all start at around €150 which i just dont have right now.
ive 'cheated' by sticking some of my chickens eggs under one of my ducks who has just started sitting, fingers crossed we get some chicks!

I did with not so great results. I could tell you about it later if you want, am nursing baby chick right now and is slow typing w/ 1 hand.

Oh wow then that doesn't help at all. I wish I knew more about hatching in an aquarium.
