Hello everyone! I received 3 hatching egg shipments today (I told you I have a sickness)!

One of them was packed in damp pine shavings. As far as I know this person isn't on BYC, so calm down! I got these eggs off ebay and they were only .99 + shipping. So the investment isn't huge. I'm just curious if anyone else has received eggs shipped in damp shavings?

They were damp, as in the wood was still wet when chipped, i.e. not cured, smelled heavily of pine.

Experiences? Guesses on whether the eggs will have been compromised?

I keep lots of notes so I'll find out eventually...

According to Stromberg that's the reccommended way of shipping eggs. The damp shavings, assuming they're not too wet and not too dry, does no harm to the eggs and minimizes moisture loss from the albumen. They're pretty dang good as shock absorbers too.

Well good to know! Most people pack in shavings and the eggs appear to be great. I've just never received any that were so, um.. piney!

I've never heard of shipping in pine shavings, wet or dry. I hope they all hatch for you.

It may be the same person I got mine from! I got EE and Lt. Brahma from her, and all her bids seem to start at $.99. In the same 'fresh' shavings, and she really double wrapped every egg, and none were broken! My first experience with shipped eggs, so opening each egg was like Christmas. One of the EE was a BIG olive colored egg, I can't wait for that one and hope it hatches!!

Well, that is interesting.

And Insideart, I have the same sickness, and I just started this.

However, when I get my next batch of eggs, any day now, I am STOPPING for a while anyway.

If I feel I am weakening perhaps it would be best if you called me and talked me out of it...

I'll pm you my phone number and we can be quitting buddies together! This should be the last for me too (after I receive my Jamie Matts eggs next week). I am running out of room and people to give the chicks too!

Jamie's got beautiful cochins, I'm sure you'll be very happy with them.

Aww thanks! I can't wait, I hope I get a few chicks out of that batch! I am wanting my DD to show at the fair. I think it will be fun for her. I have ordered the mottled bantam cochins from JM. I asked him/her (I can't tell if Jamie is fem/male) to speak really sweetly to the kind/color I like. LOL!
