Hello,

I am egg sitting and we have had 10 successful hatches so far. However, this one is not going so smoothly.

This little one was pipped this AM around 5:30. It’s now 18 hours later and they are very stuck. The membrane around the egg is white and dark brown looking. Her beak is through just a teeny tiny bit. The humidity is low (47 percent).

Do I leave her? Do I assist with some moisture? Help please.

Thanks!

It's looking pretty dry. Try to get the humidity up in the incubator, and put some coconut oil on the membrane to moisten it if you can. Most people wait for ~24 hours after the external pip before helping, but you definitely need some more water. Try to get it between 60-70%.

Does it look like she is yawning and chewing? If so she is absorbing the membrane and will you can leave her be. I like the coconut oil idea, but ducks take awhile to hatch so don't get to worried until 24 hours. keep us posted, Avery
Wait, is it a duck egg?

It’s a chicken. The membrane is so stiff and hard! I used a q-tip to put a little coconut oil on it. Maybe I should put more? Her beak is the only thing outside of the membrane. I have no idea how she will ever get out. It’s hardened so much! I added almost a cup of water to the incubator. At 48 percent humidity now. I didn’t move the egg, just quickly put coconut oil on the exposed membrane.

Thank you. I added more coconut oil to the membrane. We will see how she is in a few hours. Hopefully the added moisture does the trick. Thank you all for your assistance & experience!

Just an update. Baby chick was still stuck in the membrane this morning, even after being coated with coconut oil and the humidity increased in the incubator. I helped removed more of the shell and peeled away some of the hardened membrane. It was stuck so tightly to the chicken, he was coated in hardened membrane. I removed about 70 percent, and he got the rest off. He is teeny tiny. His belly button had not closed and had some thick bloody attachment outside of it, so I let him sit in a cup, lined with paper towel, for 4 hours under the heat lamp until he was dry. I put iodine around his belly button and on the cord, and have continued to do so. He is very active....lots of beeping and shuffling around the little bowl he is in. He doesn’t settle until you hold him and then he falls fast asleep. He is drinking from an eye dropper. I added PolyViSol to the water. He pecks at his food. I think it’s a long way to go for him to make it, but you never know. He has a strong will to live! Any suggestions for further care would be appreciated. I have him separated from the others, to keep his belly clean and so he doesn’t get trampled.
