Hatching in an egg carton ?

Thanks Julie....

I used the pulp cartons and didn't have a problem with humidity either. I put a bowl of hot water in with paper towels sticking out like a wick.

Thanks, Maggie, I couldn't stand the suspense! Hehe. I feel like I'm watching my own hatch!

I've got my eggs in pulp cartons and my humidity keeps going too high. I've got just a bit of water in the tray and it kept going above 50%...I had to pull all my plugs. I think humidity has so much to do with the humidity in your home/climate. What works for one of us won't always work for the others!

Hey ZuniBee,this is Sandra Huffman.I am hatching right now,and I just saw this and thought about trying this myself. This is day 21 and I decided that I would try this.I have got 2 little ones that have hatched and it is killing me to wait so long. And they are begining to pip and have been.Last night and all day today.Rocking and rolling, and I just went to get my egg cartoon. They were rolling around all over the bator like balls.I know it says not to mess with them ,but soemtime you have to do something. What does the hen do.So far the 2 that have hatched are doing good.So I pray these will do ok.Just before putting them in cartoon, they were pipping and peeping. So I hope they make it,But if not ,I will know better next time. And what to do.I do thank you for your advice.because I need all the help I can get. Sandra in NC,,,,,,,yes and I got more eggs coming and some waiting. So it is like I need to get these out of here.I will let you know how it turns out.Can they just get out of cartoon by their self.

I'm not sure how it will work on day 21.... but yes, it seems like they won't be able to get out but they just zip off the top of the egg and open it up and pop out. Out of 34 chicks I had one that had it's legs and head out and it's bottom in the egg. I got impatient and quickly pushed it out of the shell. All of the others were walking on top of the egg cartons when I found them.

I just set mine up for hatching using a similar idea - I'm nervous to put them in an egg carton end up as they have been lying flat the entire time.
So I made this.... (the eggs in the pic are not the hatchling eggs - those were just for show)

Thanks for the tip on the egg cartons - it really makes sense. I have seen the little chicks that hatch first knocking the other eggs everywhere. Great idea! I have three bator's going and intend to do all of them that way. We just today bought a used 1202 Sportsman cabinet bator and are getting it set up to use. The gentleman we got it from said he put the eggs in egg cartons - with a hole in the bottom to rest the pointy end and to let the air circulate, and when it's time for them to go to the hatcher, he moves the carton's and they hatch that way. He did it that way because he could get more eggs in the turners and because they were easier to handle moving them to hatching trays.
