I believe I've read several posts in the recent past about hatching eggs by placing them in an egg carton with the large end up to allow the chicks a better chance of getting out. I also saw some very negative posts about this.

What was the final out come to the debate?

Is it best to use them or to not use them?

I doubt there will ever be a final outcome....some of us like to hatch that way and have better luck doing it while others prefer to lay them on their sides and they have good luck that way. We all have to find what works best for us. The ones I've got going into the hatcher today will be going into egg cartons to hatch because I have better results that way.

I just completed my first hatch with eggs laying flat on the wire and hand turned. I had great success 16 out 16 hatched.

This time I am trying the egg carton method, so we will see how it turns out!

I turn mine in cartons, then hatch on their sides after I lost some that were pipped in the bottom.

It ends up being what works for you.

I tried a couple of hatches of each way. Ended up with the mixed working for me.

Tilting cartons is simple and quick. So that's handy.

I also like hand turning difficult eggs - ones that have been shipped and have problems or are rescue eggs from the flock with a bad start on them.

Can someone elaborate on this method? Do I just stick them in the carton and rotate the carton? How do I know that they are the right temperature/humidity, wouldn't the carton affect that?
