I'm currently hatching Wheaten and Black Copper Marans. The Wheatens eggs are smaller than the Black Coppers and almost all have hatched, but only one BC has hatched and the others haven't even pipped yet. Is this due to their size or do some birds hatch quicker than others? It is day 23.

I always find that my Marans are really late hatchers - Wheaten and Black Copper. But no, I've never found a difference with size. Before lockdown, were you sure of the fertility and how many should have hatched?

They were supposedly all fertile when I recieved them from a breeder, but I didn't check during incubation since they are so dark. They were sent to me by USPS, so I don't know if anything happened to them on the way. Incubating is so nerve-wracking!

Ah then the rest are most likely quitters. I'd recommend that if you hatch Marans again - Get a nice, bright flashlight.

On what day do I give up? Today is day 24 and no pips.

I've had an egg hatch on day 24 and have read of others on day 25.

Well I have 5 chicks so far, out of the 11 that made it. 2 chicks on Day 22 (1 pipped on day 21), 2 chicks on Day 23, and 1 chick last night at 1:00 a.m. I wonder why it's so dragged out.
