DW and kids were given some chicks by their well intending uncle (who knew they wanted to raise chickens despite my protesting). I have chicken related ptsd (joking), as I had worked in commercial chicken houses growing up. So have been dealing with hens flying the coop, cocky roosters, etc.. - entering phase 2.

DW is now getting broody and talked with Mr. Dickey. She is going ahead and removing her girls from incubation duty and going to do it herself. Timeline is a bit loose - but would say this started at t-10 days (when she caught me playing on the computer and told me to research incubators). 3-1 ordered today (assuming today is about t-7). Will post updates as we start to run the first 2-3 staged batches in the new incubator.

Forgive me - but after avoiding chicken for many years (after my traumatic childhood experience), I now can actually enjoy the taste again. So very likely stage 2-3 will be meat birds (stage 1 will go to well intending uncle). Hopefully not counting my chickens before they hatch (got to love chicken phrases). My job - for which I have been somewhat voluntold to do - is to update our brooder, and get the tractor(s) ready - so they will probably also get included in the updates.

Welcome to BYC!

Good luck on the hatches! Enjoy this back to chickens journey you are on and I hope they bring you great joy this time around. Welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with the new incubator, hope the hatches alllll go well! And have fun with the brooder and tractor builds!

Just a bit of an update - not that it is important.
DW ordered Dickey on Tuesday 5/6/14. Pmnt of $824 cleared 5/7.

per website
$607 from 3-1 incubator, digital readout.
$64 for acrylic door
$36.50 for humidity system
$22 for egg positioners - (don't know why we got 4 (2 chicken, 2 quail) - but will figure it out eventually.
$94.50 unaccounted for - if above is correct, tax and shipping.

Hoping that UPS will bring stuff today..., but next week is a lot more likely.

Incubator is definitely overkill-but planned overkill. I expect we will be doing some staged hatches and a cabinet can easily handle that.

Incubator arrived Friday 5/9. That was fast. Not 100% I did everything correctly but had it up and running Friday night. Played around with it several more hours on Saturday setting the backup and primary thermostats. Went to weigh the eggs only to find my digital scale was doa. First 1/2 tray was set late Saturday evening. If the hens continue to cooperate, will set the next 1/2 tray next week. Have not decided on if we do a third set or not yet.

The race is on. I have 2-3 weeks to update my brooder. Then another 4 to improve the growout pen. Had hopped to get the new brood eras built this weekend, but Mother's Day put a dent in my woodwork schedule.
