Hatching Problems

I am a science teacher and I have tried to hatch eggs 4 times and none have worked. One time my sub turned the temp up to 126 degrees... Anyway, this last time I had one chick hatch out but it died the next day. when I threw out the othr eggs, I cracked them open and many had chicks that were dead. They developed but still had a large yolk sac attached. I am careful with the temp and humitiy and I have a fan in my incubator but I don't know what I am doing wrong. I keep the humity for the first 18 days around 50% give or take. Can anyone give me some advice on this? My kids are ready to give up and I am too!

Double check your temperature and humidity readings. I've been caught out by faulty equipment the first time I hatched, so that's where I start when I do everything "by the book" and it doesn't work. This hatch problem analysis is very helpful and interesting, it may help you figure this out:

If the chicks made it to lock down but never hatched, then this sounds like a ventilation issue. You say you cracked some open and they were to full term. Chicks at hatch need tons of oxygen. So one of the biggest mistakes is to forget to open all vents wide open. Without fresh air, the chicks will die before hatch. Get your humidity up to 65% to 70% at lock down as well.

A ventilation problem...I have a fan in my incubator that is under one of the holes and I leave the other one open all the time. Do I need more than that?

If the fan is sucking fresh air in it should be adequate. How big is the hole?
