Hatching process, after Pip?

We set 31 eggs. We have 13 chicks and one that pipped more than 24 hrs ago. I can see it's little beak in to hole. It isn't moving much anymore though. I am aftraid it is dying. What can I do to help without risking killing it?

If it's been pipped for more than 24 hours it maybe struggling to finish the hatching process. Have a read of this ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching

I've read that twice now. Mostly what I hear is "You're going to murder your chick" and I'm already terrified, and not feeling confident in what to do. It isn't real clear how to tell when it's time to intervene... I'm afraid the baby already died in the shell. It hasn't really moved for a few hours. No chirping since last night or early morning. But when I read that help article thing again it says I might have already harmed the baby by trying to help even the tiniest bit. So unsure what to do...

Don't feel bad and I'm sorry the chick has passed

I'm in general not a helper of chicks and let nature take its course. Of the chicks I've helped out of the shell when hatch is complete they have either passed away soon after or have developed with issues as they have grown. A strong healthy chick will always hatch on its own and hatching is the first real big test of life for them. In nature only the strongest will hatch and thrive.

Did you remove any shell from the chick? Start the zip process for it? Was there any blood?

I just followed the video instructions in the first video on how to remove the shell around the cap. The baby is not moving at all. Zero movement. I think it is dead. I'm so sad now.

I guess I feel like we should be able to help because I had to have help delivering my own children. If we went by the rule that only the strong survive, my Mom would have died in childbirth with me. She never would have had any of my siblings. I would have died in childbirth with my firstborn also and wouldn't have had my 4 children. So I have trouble with that line of thinking I guess. I want to save as many as I can. This is compounded by the end of a brutal winter where we lost 4 pets (1 cat, 2 pullets, and 1 hen). Wishing we had never moved to Idaho. It's been hard.

You are able to help if you wish, these are your eggs and only you can make that decision. I was just saying what I do or would do in the same situation. We all have our own way of doing things and that's fine.

I'm sorry you have lost pets and have had a brutal winter, with spring on the way I hope things get better for you

I know this is an old post but I was just reading through and I completely agree with you about that assisting chick post . Everyone refers to that for any questions about assisting, but it does make you feel like you WILL most likely kill your chick if you help! And doesn't offer clear advice on WHEN it's appropriate to apply the procedures stated.

We are hatching our second batch in a month. Very nerve racking! I had all but one hatch last time (6 of7). And not sure how we will do this round. 10 eggs set…2 are pipping. I dk t want to intervene…. I’m guessing if it passes, maybe it’s more peaceful than me pulling blood vessels? I don’t knkw. I would help if I think it would actually help! Last eggs, the last one never even pipped…. So I just kept it in bator an extra 36hours and let it go….
