Hatching Quail in an NR360

I use an nr360. It was my first incubator. I find if you put shelf liner, the eggs roll less during hatch, I also make channels of shelf liner to keep them lined up and not rolling around during hatch. Having shelf liner under during incubation helps the eggs roll smoothly especially when doubled up in the slots. Without liner they tend to flip around more, but you need to cut like a square inch around the center spindle so the turner moves freely. Another tip is to put the eggs in the slots butt to butt with tips pointing away from each other, they stay in place best that way.

I have had a chick get its leg caught in the flooring around the peg in the center when I remove the turner, so I also put an additional piece of shelf liner over that during lockdown and hatch.
What mine looks like right now:

That’s a really nice shelf liner. I’ll look into something like that for my next hatch. As it is, I spend an hour last night trying to figure out something to use. Cut out cardboard, tried paper towel. then took all the eggs out, put in cheesecloth, put eggs back in. Then panicked that cheesecloth was going to get all balled up, took the cheese cloth out. Ended up tossing and turning at 2 am thinking I killed the eggs by taking them out of the incubator. >.<

Le sigh.

I’m gonna leave well enough alone this hatch and see how it goes. My concern with liners is that I’m scared they’ll get wet due to the humidity where I live, and reduce my hatch rate. I need to Ultimately create something plastic that can;t absorb water.

I live swamp adjacent, I wash and hang the shelf liner to dry after use, if I’m refilling the bator right away, I put it in wet for a couple hours before I add the eggs, and it dries out and humidity goes back to nothing (I think it says E or something when it’s below like 24%). If you want to lower the humidity, put dry rice in the large channel underneath, I never use the large channel, to get it up to 55-60 at lockdown I just have to close the vent and have some water in the small channel. You can also put a small cup with rice or water depending on your needs, up top on the middle of the turner and it will ride the ride and help adjust the humidity. I have run it with and without shelf liner and as long as the liner is dry before you put the eggs in, the humidity is not affected.

I think your eggs are fine. I take eggs out of my brinsea to candle 1 tray at a time, each tray is out for 4 or 5 minutes, but they all do well. The shelf liner is just the Rubbermaid or whatever Home Depot had for sale when I was looking for shelf liner. I never had any before so I didn’t know there was a difference until I opened one that was larger and bumpier than the rest.

Okay, I added paper towels so at least the middle and most of the holes are covered. :/

Hope I havent screwed anything up too much. This is my first hatch with this machine.
