Hi. I'm incubating chicken eggs, for the first time.
I bought them locally, they're 'barnyard mix' and I'm using a home made incubator. On day 10 I candled and all were developing except for 1, no veins, so I cracked it open and it was infertile. Not bad out of 18 and not really knowing what I was doing! So it is now day 13, I'm getting excited, but today I'm thinking about the size of some of the eggs. I have a few that are pretty tiny, and a couple that are large but have rough thick shells. I shouldn't have incubated the thick rough shelled ones, I've learned since then, but I don't want to take them out since they're already developing. Are they likely to die while they are trying to hatch if not before? And the small eggs, I get a feeling they might've been from a young chicken that hasn't been laying long so will this be an issue during the hatch as well?
I am nervous about the hatch. I have been treating these eggs like little babies and it'll be sad to see some not survive.
