Hi. I'm incubating chicken eggs, for the first time.
I bought them locally, they're 'barnyard mix' and I'm using a home made incubator. On day 10 I candled and all were developing except for 1, no veins, so I cracked it open and it was infertile. Not bad out of 18 and not really knowing what I was doing! So it is now day 13, I'm getting excited, but today I'm thinking about the size of some of the eggs. I have a few that are pretty tiny, and a couple that are large but have rough thick shells. I shouldn't have incubated the thick rough shelled ones, I've learned since then, but I don't want to take them out since they're already developing. Are they likely to die while they are trying to hatch if not before? And the small eggs, I get a feeling they might've been from a young chicken that hasn't been laying long so will this be an issue during the hatch as well?
I am nervous about the hatch. I have been treating these eggs like little babies and it'll be sad to see some not survive.

Hi there......take a deep breathe and let nature take its course. I have incubated lots of clutches over the years. Large eggs mixed with small eggs, thicker egg shelled eggs and newbie eggs. If they are fertile and developing, then they will hatch as long as the temp and humidity are regulated.

Good luck with your hatch! :jumpy
Best wishes & Be well!!! ❤️

How did your chicks turn out? I also am incubating small eggs and a couple that are a little sandy feeling and curious to know if yours had any trouble?

The thick shell hatched fine on it's own. The smaller eggs hatched healthy chicks.

I also incubated the first 3 eggs laid by the pullets from the original post and they were smaller but healthy chicks.
