Hatching store bought eggs~ Whole Foods vs. Trader Joes

I would suggest getting eggs from a farm if you are going to try.

This thread is a year old, some of the folks posting may not follow it closely (or at all) any more.

As to "white shop n save" eggs, I don't know that brand. The experimental grocery store eggs I hatched were from Trader Joe's Markets in the Central California Valley area; not all TJs sell fertile eggs.

This thread was originally started as a comparison between Whole Foods and Trader Joe's for folks deliberately wanting to just see if they personally can hatch refrigerated grocery store eggs.

It just so happened white Leghorns are a fantastic laying breed (duh - in the business to sell eggs, that's what you wanna raise) so spending less than three bucks for a dozen fertile eggs to HATCH out great layers ranks up there as a good - and fun! - plan to increase one's flock.

If the eggs say fertile and they're not too old and stored no lower than 35 degrees they should be okay. A lot of breeders say that, and store refrigeration may be about that so it could be possible? I might try it next year.

Henny Penny, my bleeping but dear Trader Joe's hatched leghorn has gone broody twice this summer! She did end up being a great mom, but I had no eggs I that needed hatching this time around, so I took her on a daily swim in the pool. Finally, on the 4th day of trying to break her, I broke her. I didn't let her back in the run with her friends (and access to the coop) after our swim, and found her perched after sunset, on top of the run, and then, the next day, she finally stopped being broody. You can't trust any bird to be true to it's breed! LOL.

gimmie birdies, the point is that you can take eggs from the grocery store and hatch 'em, it's just weirdly fun

However, after learning so much this past year, I wouldn't do this again because the birds that laid the eggs may not have been given the best nutrition, etc... for laying hatching eggs and now I'd worry about hatching a bird that was not healthy, has leg issues or something else. However, the birds I did hatch ended up healthy and it was very fun

I am not saying you can't I have hatched many a fridge egg- but you would still get better luck from fresh.

I am sure no one would dispute that fact, but "we" who have done or attempted hatching grocery store eggs mostly wanted to know if we could accomplish the task. An Eggsperiment with the bonus of possible addition of great layers to a flock.

I wanted to try cherry lane eggs today- they are really dark but they didn't have any in.

Is anyone still hatching store eggs?

I discovered this thread accidently but am intrigued. We built an incubator as a project this year & tested it our with some backyard eggs. My daughter talked me into adding a very large egg from the fridge. (I think she was hoping for a double yolk -twins.) I didn't think it had a chance after being in the fridge for 2 days. Instead of a tasty breakfast, we got "Omelet" a very friendly but kind of ugly chick. I see next year's project forming....
