Hatching Today...I'm Terrified!

I'm exhausted!
We have 9 babies!!! I'm shocked.

I do have a brooder with a heat lamp (its a box and a goose neck lamp).
I've also been taking them home at night because our facility is on the lake and we have all kinds of other wildlife that sometimes find their way into the vents and into the classrooms.

We are having a blast with them....the coolest thing I've seen now is two kids who are in rival gangs...which is something they take very seriously here....working together to clean the brooder and keep the chicks warm.
The coolest picture I have taken is of their hands in the box with the chicks around them. One hand is black, one is hispanic and the other is white. Its really moving. The chicks don't care about race and for an hour the boys didn't either. Nor, did they care about gangs or fighting. That pic is on my actual digital camera so I will load it soon.
The bottom pics are from my phone.

Besides my son being born, this experience has been the most amazing experience I've had in my 26 years.
My principal has really enjoyed this experience and is interested in a small 4-H program now. This benefits the boys on so many levels.

Thank you everyone for your advice! And thank you for all of the nice things you have said about our project!!!!!

Congratulations on your hatch! It is great to hear that this project has brought those boys together. I hope that you are able to find more things that can bridge the gap for them!

Stacie, what a neat experience! And what CUTE little fuzz-butts! So glad it worked out well for you! What breeds of chicks do you have in there?

I sent you a PM...

Not awful at all. IN fact I think it's just perfect!!! I think teaching the boys about the breed in this circumstance just kind of reinforces the "everybody is something" and should be separate thinking. Just let them be mutts for them and something that brings them together.

Let the my chick is better than your chick be because it's cuter.

HI Stacie --

I have been discouraged over all the negative things in the news this week --
Your boys and the chicks have been a wonderful distraction and thank you SO much for sharing it with us!

As a retired teacher, I can tell you that it's this kind of thing that makes an impact!

I taught struggling 2nd graders and the year we raised the baby squirrel ("Lucky Harry") in our classroom was one of the best!
Every single kid wanted to read and write about squirrels -- :)

Your whole story is a 'keeper' -- is there some way that you/your school can make a book out of it --- pictures and have the boys write a sentence or two about how they felt when the chicks hatched???

Those boys now feel part of 'something big' -- and that's one of the best gifts you can give!

Blessings!

Hi Stacie,

What a great job you are doing! This is the most insperational thing I've read in ages, and I almost missed it. Congratulation to you and the boys for being such great chicken mommies!

You don't say what state/area you are in, and probably you can't on an open thread, but if you want to do this again and are in my area (we have a facility like you describe not far away) please feel free to pm me and I'll get you some eggs and help with homes for the chicks if needed. You could also sell the chicks on CL and perhaps help support the project if you plan to make it a regular part of your class. I'm also sure if you are not close to me that you are close to somebody else on BYC who would be happy to help if asked, so please ask. This whole thing is just outstanding!!

Nice. I'm glad they got a successful hatch, and as odd as it is to say, I'm not sorry the first attempt was a bust, well, not too sorry.

I know they know things don't go well all the time, BUT, because they got to TRY AGAIN, they now see that trying over and sometimes over is worth it sometimes.

poo happens, life happens, but it's worth trying again!
