Hatching Today!!

She is officially on her way out. The crack is now becoming a hole. I've heard the struggle of hatching is important for the chick to build strength. It makes sense. I am usually of the mind don't interfere if you don't have to. I just had a Silverudd pip upside down though. I flipped her and put her back in the incubator. I watched and I did see her beak pushing at the membrane so I think she'll be ok too. So 6 officially pipping externally..

Sounds like the hatch is moving along nicely for you! Do be careful about opening the incubator while you have external pips. It's good to keep it closed to keep the humidity more consistent now that the membrane is exposed.

I wasn't planning on it however, as far as I am aware they drown when they pip upside down. It happened in my first hatch also.. I had to assist a little bit the other chicks ended up finishing it for me. Lol

They only drown if your experiencing issues with humidity being too high at lockdown which would cause water to build up inside the air cell. I've never lost a chick to pipping on the bottom. You should be just fine. :)

I have. This was my first hatch I had 1 chick out of 2 eggs hatch due to this. The chick pipped upside when I was in bed, & didn't know about it until morning. It suffocated due to being upside down on the paper towel I had down to keep the incubator cleaner during hatch.

Oh no! Did the paper get stuck to the pip hole? I've never tried paper towels before. I have good luck with the no-skid shelf liner if you've never tried that before.

I have used the no skid stuff for a brooder with puppy pad underneath.. It worked great until they got bigger.. Maybe paper towels on the bottom and no skid on the top? Absorbing and could help prevent spaddle leg.. Hmmmmm thanks!!

Or cut puppy pad to size maybe...

I'm sure the type of incubator you're using will determine your options for what will work well but since the water reservoirs are underneath the grate in most of my incubators I only use the no-skid shelf liner because it has holes in it to allow moisture through. The Brinsea mini would allow for something different since the little water cup is in the center though so it may make cleanup that much easier with both paper towels and shelf liner. You'll have to try it out and let us know. ;)
