I want to hatch chicks under my broody. They will be part Buff part Sussex.is it a good idea to mix breeds ? Can I hatch chicks
in the nest box ? Any advice welcome,Thanks,Ann

If you mean putting eggs from both breeds under then, yes. I hatch out several breeds with each of my broodies. I would move the broody out of the coop entirely if you have other birds, to reduce stress on the hen and ensure the safety of the chicks. A nest box on the ground or on the floor of the pen makes sure that the babies don't fall to the ground and so they can get back under the hen for warmth.

Thanks, does this mean I have to get a new coop ?
No, you don't need an entirely new coop. I use an old dog crate. You could even use tall pieces of card board, or pieces of plywood to close a corner off in your garage. Think simple, yet functioning.
