The main thing is it holds the eggs in front of the camera but it does other things too. The eggs don't get kicked around but they are still in a natural on there side position. It also opens up space in the incubator to make room for the chicks that have hatched.
So far, no. And I have been doing it this way far a while, not sure if its been a year yet or not. The fall is not that far so I don't think any will ever get hurt.

I ran a page load test on one of my webcam pages the other day an it to about 30 seconds to load everything. I ran the same test again an it loaded the whole page in just under 3 seconds. So I guess its about 10 times quicker.
