Hatching with 2 broodies

I think I started a new mixed breed! All 7 of the chick's look the same! Ancona and black copper marans. Some have feathered feet but some dont. Also I have two black copper marans polish who look the exact same even the comb and they and brother and sister! SO COOL! They have a little crest like a brabanter. Got to get pictures tomorrow!
They sound so cute. I have had fun with my little sex link hybrids too.
How many broods you guys have!? How many chicks to?
two broodies raising chicks one with 4.5 week olds one with 5 day olds two on eggs
I have a single broody and I have no idea how many eggs she is setting on. All I know is that about everyday one of my other hens is adding to the pile...grrr... she is a woods broody hiding out there somewhere. She comes each day down off the mountain to eat and drink. Then back to the woods she goes. I've tried following her but she is quick and camo so I lose her everytime. Here she is on her visit today she's the tiny one in front
Beautiful roo. Make sure to post a pic when she comes back with her clutch.
Sorry... have to agree with everyone else... lots of red... Actually, I do think it works, and not just on Cochins - or at least worked for me last year. That's exactly how I am predicting the genders on my two-week olds (they are Cochins and Orps - I figure Orps should be similar enough to Cochins in feathering out).
Yeah...well I have a home for one of them already....just waiting on a few girls to hatch so that I can send him off with company. This is interesting stuff! Thanks for sharing it. I am going to go look at my boy brood and compare them to Aster
I have also noticed that roosters feather way slower. Nearly regardless of breed. If all the chicks have tails except 3 or 4 those 3 or 4 are the boys everytime. Weird how roosters have bigger tails but are last to grow tails... At least most of the boys I hatch from my own flock are plain and ugly... makes them easier to Butcher and tastier if you ask me... I can't bring myself myself to eat a pretty rooster, which is why I have such an extensive rooster collection.

So the 7 eggs i had in the new 48 egg incubator were no go. Candled again at day 5 and ended up cracking them all open to find nothing. The eggs look to be fertile, so were gonna save some more and try the old incubator. Also getting a thermometer to check the temps in the incubators.

Good news, the 2 new layers are approaching 1 per day so getting 2-3 eggs per day which is great. From what ive read the you should wait until a hen is a year old and been laying a while before hatching her eggs. So only viable eggs are from the bantam australorp Betty x Rocky in the avatar. At least we can try those and still have some eggs to eat. It will be interesting to see what we get when they work, small black with large golden mmmm

Good morning Team Broody … TGIF!

IC, hhhm, OK, while not 100% accurate, the wing-thing seems to have quite a degree of merit and I am interested to see how it goes if everyone is happy to document/participate.

Thank you for the link also, definitely some good comparison pictures and there does seem to be some evidence that this is a pretty good method.

If I do cave on the broody thing, I will definitely be getting some more eggs from Blondie’s breeder so I will also be able to check it out on that hatch also.

16 paws, sorry, I did not intentionally mean to not include you in the theory testing. With all our chickens and lots of Team Broodies now, it is a bit hard to keep track of who has what.

The first picture of your little one is ideal as a test because you are thinking pullet because of the comb size but if the theory works, wings are saying rooster. Same as Tammy/Tommy. Definitely interested to see what that little one turns out to be. By the way, very cute!

MN01; you are very lucky that the predators avoid your place .. definitely hooray.
"At least most of the boys I hatch from my own flock are plain and ugly... makes them easier to Butcher and tastier if you ask me." oh dear,

Well most roosters are really pretty and I always have a hard time getting rid of them, so I always have far too many roosters.

We have a large mutt that is mixed with who knows what and a 4lb Yorkie-poo...but at night the chickens are on their own..I'm not sure what keeps everything away, but I'm glad whatever it is does
Yes, my chickens also have been safe at night, it has always been the daytime that something happens.
Oh well, a bigger dog would help I do believe.
Thanks and have fun with your chickens!
Marie
