Ok, I missed that on your first post that they are cochins, duh, lol
We all love cochins here and we are glad you joined our crazy broody thread.

You will meet a group of really nice people here that can help with questions you may have. We may not always know the answer but we can put our heads together and try and figure things out.
I started off with 3 chickens 2 years ago and now I think I have around 27!
Have you heard of chicken math yet? haha

Hi Teila,
I was just about to send out a post asking where you were. I havent heard anything lately and was wondering about you!

How are the girls?
I kind of figured you were hard at work.
Sorry about the underpaid part but I can certainly relate.
I had to work on Sunday so my boss gave me Wed off instead so I have the next 2 days off, whoo-hooo. I love being home.....

Hey Marie :)

The girls are good; thank you for asking

As I said, I do not have much to contribute at the moment; cruising along nicely.

Cilla abruptly cut the cord and dumped Blondie. Blondie is probably regretting strutting around with her Princess Tiara on because now she has been dumped, she is having to repair bridges and make friends with LuLu and Tina way down the bottom of the pecking order!

There will be a collective sigh of relief when Cilla goes broody again and gets locked down to the broody pen; she is currently taking her matriarch role just a tad seriously and will walk up behind LuLu and grab a beak full of tail feathers, because she can! Tina circles around Cilla, giving her a wide berth and poor ole Blondie is still a little confused as to what the h*ll happened! lol

Cilla is still the only layer at the moment; getting 1 egg every day or two. But, commence possible happy dance, I do believe that Blondie semi-squatted yesterday! Tina and LuLu cannot be far behind her .. Dusty? Pffft! Gave up on ever seeing an egg from her again! lol

All my girls have either been timid or quite happy to be picked up, cuddled etc. While LuLu and Blondie are not timid, they are, however, spunky little things who are not afraid to peck you if you are doing something they do not like! Cheeky little munchkins, I am thinking they will be a couple of Broodzillas if/when they go broody

Cilla, on the other hand, gives everyone but me a hard time; she is happy for me to pick her up at any time; lets me look at her eggs, handle chicks etc .. she knows who is the real boss at Bambrook Bantams

Teila,
Glad everything is going along well with the girls. The pecking order thing can be a little rough at times for them huh? Sounds like Lulu is experiencing a little of that. The chicken dynamics are so interesting to watch. It makes everyday with them interesting and funny waiting to see what happens next.
Cilla seems like a real character. I am glad she is so mellow with you.

Sounds like you may be getting another layer soon!

Take care and let us know what is new....

They are 5 weeks old. I will try to get some better pictures. They are warming up to me a bit. They are all SLW x EE mixes except for the two white ones, which are SLW x White Leghorn. I feel comfortable saying I have one of each for the leghorns. I will take a better look at the rest. 4 of the EE mixes are very alike so it will be hard to single them out. I'll do my best!!

Well, in case it helps, here are my 3 boys from first hatch, at 5 weeks old. The blue was the super obvious one from hatch. The other two between 4-6 weeks. I think they are cushion comb (not sure what it's called or the exact distinctions), but the beginning stages should be similar for all those that aren't straight, from what I've seen.

And the one below is a girl (not a great pic, but the only one I could find from that week of the girl's comb visible...)

Hope someone is out there that can help me.
Two of Pennys eggs have pipped and I just went to check on her and the chick is out and dead! Baby looks fine but is dead. When I pick her up her head just rolls around.
I think Penny is killing these chicks! Too many now to just be something else everytime. If you remember all of her hatches have failed. Not one chick made it out alive. She is fine with grafted in chicks and is a really good mom, I cant believe this...
I took out the other egg that is chirping and put it under my other broody but I dont trust her either because she has never been a mama before. Should I take the egg and put it under the heat lamp? Will it hatch there?
HELP
