Hatching with 2 broodies

Oh my, Coops, how nerve wracking!
Since you have the incubator, I'm guessing you know how to use it! I hope it all works out for you!!

Oh no, Dot got off the eggs 7 days in & they went cold. She's back on them again now. Any ideas on how long eggs remain viable? Was thinking of waiting a few days then candling them. Any thoughts on likelihood of successful chicks hatching? Would it be better to put a new bathch of fertilised eggs under her now on the assumption the originals won't work?

Just candled 3 eggs, 2 look all good, movement etc will check all tomorrow night and discard then. Time to look at some pics and video of candling... Eggtastic

G'Day Team Broody :)

Pooman, I am most definitely not an expert and the following are just my thoughts.
How long do you think Dot was off the eggs? I have read stories of eggs still being viable after the hen left them for many hours.
If she is back on them now, I would be optimistic and trust that she knows what she is doing. Many times I was stressing because I thought Cilla had left her eggs too long (only 1/2 an hour or so lol) but obviously my stress was unfounded :)
I cannot help with the candling at all; read about it heaps but never tried it!

Any news Coops?

I wonder how TG is going also?

Howdy Liz; how are the family doing? :)

Cilla & Co are doing well .. gees, they are growing quick; I might try and get some more pictures soon. Thankfully Dusty has decided, once again, that being broody is not much fun and has gone back to her usual chicken duties. If she ever decides to stick it out more than a day, I am most definitely going to leave her for a broody-week before even thinking about trusting her with a hatch; she seems to lack commitment lol.

It is a little soon for celebrating but I do believe that Britney has turned the corner and may be on the road to recovery. This morning when she got up she was showing more interest in breakfast than she has for a week and unbelievably, no diarrhoea overnight. She actually shook her tail and had a stretch a couple of times which she has not done for a week. Her tail is not so droopy today. She is still sleepy/lethargic but I am hoping with all my heart that she is on the improve. She is moving around a bit more and I just checked on her, she is back at the breakfast-bar again!

I am not working today as I have a post-op appointment at the hospital and hopefully when I get back, she may have improved some more.

Go Team Broody!!

So glad to hear that Britney may be on the mend, Teila!
Pooman, I've heard the eggs can be left for 12 hours - try to not worry about it more than necessary. I definitely wouldn't give the hen new eggs, if you're worried about her taking breaks - no reason to think she wouldn't leave the new eggs too. Best to stick through this hatch and see how it goes (I say with such authority!). :)
TG and Coops and Carrie, any news????

Here are a couple recent shots of my cuties. I posted on the black copper marans thread to get some opinions on sex and future coloring, explaining that they were shipped eggs, hatched by broodies, and they wouldn't be breeding, so I didn't care if they met the standards, and in fact, I like too much copper, and the only response I got was someone saying that if Frida was the mom, she had too much copper and the wrong comb to be a marans. I don't know why I ever try to venture forth from this thread!

Liz, I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't be but I am laughing .. between us you would think we would have learnt our lesson but what's the bet one of us ventures again? lol

They are adorable!! Very adventurous looking munchkins :)

My appointment was 10:45 (got there at 10:30) saw the Doc at 01:30! .. so basically, left home at 9am - 10mins with the Doc (admittedly good news) and home at 03:15. Fun day! lol
Anyway, when I got home Britney was back at the food-bar, filling up! Still 'sleepy looking' but I am even more optimistic than this morning!

Ditto ... TG and Coops and Carrie, any news????

Well hi team...

Some bad news, the one eyed rooster (literally) isn't shooting straight. 6/6 of his eggs failed, 2/4 from the other pen fail, so we are left with 2/10 that look alive and kicking. Cracked the eggs to confirm and they are not good..... Its a bit sad

We will see how the other 2 go and sort out this rooster situation

Thanks for the advice given people, much appreciated

Hello All! I have had a busy weekend!!!! Sorry to leave you hanging! :) SO as a recap, my little pullet 7 mo old laid a clutch of 16 with one LF imposter laying an egg in ther clutch as well for a total of 17. After candling on day 10 to get rid of some cause my lil peanut couldn't handle all them eggs we were down to 7. Day 24 rolls around and I leave Sat morning to my daughters dance class... check on Mama and hear PEEPING!!! Come back after class and 2 babies YAYYYY!!!
jumpy.gif
So I leave her be and go to the pumpkin patch with my family and come home to 3 BABIES!!! Unfortunately after the next 24 hours the remaing eggs died of cold with one even half hatching and it's poor beak sticking out of the egg.... so mad at myself for not catching it earlier!! I was just trying to not interfere too much but I think she got so preoccupied with keeping her chicks warm she was moving off the eggs too much. Couldn't take breaking it open to check it out and see if it was perfectly fine otherwise :( So anyways we have 3 healthy beautiful chicks and all are doing fabulous even with the rediculously cold weather here in Maine right now with it getting into the 20's at night! So without further adieu I give you FUZZY BUTT PICS!!!

This is my half hatched baby I lost..... booo :(
