Hatching with 2 broodies

Cool Liz, looking forward to the pictures of the run; I reckon they will appreciate it, may be not as much as you, but still, it's the thought that counts lol :)

Hhhhm, it does sound like Rosseau may be the one reluctant to give up her comfy bed; either that or Desi was thinking "no way I am sleeping in there again, someone tries to kill you!" and Lucy was feeling sorry for Rosseau :) Or maybe Lucy does not want to sleep in the same place as Desi? Who would know? Chickenalities are complicated

Aaaaw poor Grace .... that is just mean! lol
I have to agree actually, I have noticed far less holes but more weeds since Britney passed away .. she definitely was my little wrecking ball! Some seem to be more garden-friendly than others.

Fingers crossed that when I get home Cilla is not camped out in the nest box

You guys gotta quite being so mean to your chickens... just kidding.
I think Miss Molly has that destructive gene...totally destroys the coop on a daily basis. Oh my gosh! yesterday....I caught my neighbors dog...the chicken eater...I caught him in my barn eating all my chicken food!!!!! I usually keep it in a big plastic tub with a lid. (the bag was too big and I couldnt put the lid on it at the time...But, I just bought a big 50 lb bag of chick starter because my chickens have gone on strike and have decided they only want to eat the chick starter. They leave their layena...or scratch... completely leave it alone and go after the chickies little feeders. Jealous chickens...they think someones getting a treat they are not getting and they throw a fit. Anyway. So I bought a big bag of the chick starter to let them have some too so they would leave the chickies food / feeders alone....I go into the barn and catch him red handed...face in the bag, mouth full of chick starter. It was pretty funny but he is a little too close for comfort with the new bubbys and all, so I had to call his "dad" and tell him he was back at my house...didnt eat a chicken but he's up to no good again.
OK official fuzzy butt pictures.

I just thought this was a cute picture of Sassy.....

Oh my, how scary!! I guess it makes sense - chickstarter has more protein than most dog food, I think. But that dog has got to stay away from your yard!

That fuzzy-butt shot is way too cute!

Is it possible that Sassy is a splash Marans? Your penguin chick looks like a Marans chick, and Sassy looks like a splash Marans, and I think I saw some pretty dark eggs in one of your shots.

Maybe they are Marans ? The lay dark brown eggs. They guy who gave them to me said Americaunaa but he must have meant tge one rooster...I think Bart must be a Maran too. Yes. It's scary!! I'm on my way home from work and have been worrying all day with that dog roaming around. Every time I see him I chase him off. Yelling and throwing rocks. Lol. Good thing there's not too many people around...theyd think I'm crazy. But it's obviously not scaring him too much.
Have we heard from Pooman?? I was curious to see how Wonky and Rocky are doing.

Aaaaw, beautiful bubbies!

Working half a day today and then home to make Trifle for the Aussies in the family and Pumpkin Pie for the American! lol

As usual, the cooking of the Turkey is being left to the expert which is not me!

Just wanted to send you all seasons greetings and wishes for a bright and cheerful Christmas. I, for one, am going to enjoy a bonus two days with all of my little family.

xoxoxo

The mystery has been solved! At twilight, I kicked Rousseau and Desi out of the nest and closed it off and watched what happened next. Rousseau stared long and hard at the roost where Frida and Lucy were aready tucked in for the night and finally jumped up, only to get a serious pecking for her efforts from Frida! Poor Rou jumped back down and tried to get back in the nest, but I closed it off better and she gave the roost another try, only to get pecked again! In the meantime, Desi made his way next to his sister with no interference. Finally, Rousseau hopped onto the other roost, next to Bettina, who acted a bit put out, but didn't peck poor Rou.

So there you have it! It's not all marital harmony with the two moms after all! Maybe Frida has resented sharing the hatch all this time.

Enjoy the chocolate eggs, TGG! Your chickens are fancier than you thought! That little penguin chick gave it away.

Enjoy the baking, Teila! I think I'll make buche de noel tomorrow night (I've been saving up the eggs!), and maybe a pie. I'm going carolling tonight for the first time in many years - I'm not a lover of Christmas carols, but I do love to sing!
I hope everyone has a merry Christmas, however you spend it.

I'll be so glad to be off the next couple of days. I'll be cooking for my kiddos and hubby tomorrow night. Then again, on Wednesday for my Hubby's family.... I wish I liked to cook more....
Thanks LIz!!! for helping me to figure out what kind of chickens I have. I've done a bit of looking around and Looks like you are right...
You guys have a very Merry Christmas!!!!!

I was doing some checking on splash marans and found this pic. You are right on Liz. It's not so easy to find splash maran pics but as I looked I found some that looked exactly like my girls...And today I saw this pic of these little chicks. A penguin!!! lol
We had a drama here last night. 2 am I wake up and hear screaming chickens...not exactly...but you know what I mean. I run outside in my robe and find the flock out! I still dont know exactly HOW they all got out, the door was a little ajar... but no big holes and the net was still over the top. I rounded them up and put them back on the roost. I was not finding the chicks anywhere! I was up to my elbows in hay. Digging in hay, looking under nesting boxes... I was yelling at the gang...Where are the chicks!!! but my chicken ESP was not working. I finally gave up. Sad and almost in tears i go back to the house and I hear cheep cheep cheep...WAY out under an evergreen they came running out! What in the world happened. They played quiet for at least 15 minutes as I was rounding up Mom and the others and trying to convince them to TALK. I was almost in the house...Thank goodness I heard them.... They let me gather them up..they usuallly run from me. Miss Molly gladly hopped down off the perch and sat on them. They fussed at her for another 15 minutes before they finally settled down. they stayed on the middle of the coop the rest of the night with Bart standing guard right beside her. He finally sat down but he didnt get back up on the roost either. I dont know what it was or what happened. Whatever it was it didnt eat anyone, thankfully. I think I got very lucky!!
