I love the grafting idea.. I did the same grafting a large paper shell with a native pecan tree making very large paper shell pecans...then I moved and lost my tree.

but that 's OK I will have bunches of peaches and plums and cant wait to try a cherry tree!! (eventually) are you grafting a type of plum onto your cherry plum tree to get bigger plums and what are pluot scions. .You should be a chicken breeder!

Ooh, what's a paper shell pecan? That sounds amazing! Sorry, you lost your tree. I swear, I'll never move now that I've planted so much here. Pluots are a cross between a plum and an apricot. They are very popular, though since I'm spoiled with fresh plums, I don't buy them. Scions are the little sticks from other trees that you graft onto existing fruit trees or rootstocks. I got a whole bunch of different kinds of plum scions to graft onto my trees from a huge scion exchange in Berkeley, run by a local branch of the California Rare Fruit Growers. Maybe there's something similar in Texas?
I'm not sure I have the heart to breed chickens. I get too attached. We'll see how my one broody-hatch a year plan goes. So far this year, no broodies and barely even any eggs these days. Everyone seems to be taking the day off. Bettina laid two days in a row, and now has taken 2 days off, maybe 3. Still nothing from the 3 hold-outs.
I took a few felfies with Bettina, and I swear she's posing similarly in each one. In the few selfies I've taken with animals, they seem to have the same expressions/head tilts, etc. as me. We are so much closer in personality than we give other animals credit for.

MM, I feel lucky that I never tore my ACL playing ultimate - very many of my friends have. Sadly, I have almost no cartilage left in my right knee, though, so I'm retired as well. Had to switch to biking and long romantic walks with my dog.

Quote: They are amazing. Almost 3 times as big as a native pecan. Natives are so small but the taste is great. not much bigger than a lttle marble! Paper shells are huge! and you can squeeze one in a bare hand and break the shell. You can shell them so quickly. The little native pecans can take all day and the shells are so tough you often cant get all the pecan out. The paper shells are so fast, the trick I think is to get a paper shell that is as tasty as the natives.

Wow .. I step away for a couple of days and have lots to catch up on!

Luv the felfies and so nice to put a face to the name :)
I will try and join in with a felfie over the weekend. I don't have a farm though :(

Aaaaw, TGG, that does sound like one of those days!!

I have some pictures to share ...... 2 weeks and 2 days old. (Feel free to agree or disagree with the gender guesses aka GG=)

First up, we have Blondie, sporting a rather impressive pair of clown shoes (GG=pullet)

Next we have the darker blue/grey (GG=I'm stumped on this one!)

The lighter blue/grey (GG=Rooster)

To finish, we have the black and nearly black bubbies (GG=rooster)

This one I threw in because I thought it was kinda cute! :)

this is so adorable!!!

I love those fuzzy feet...little fluff ball! just wanna squeeze her!!! My guess ....she
LL
another fuzzy feel...so cute!!! Guessing a girl.....
this one threw me....of the three pics the center pic looked different. The comb was not as red in the center pic. not sure on this one.
this is the only one that really stands out to me and lookes like it might be a roo....what a cutie!!!!!!
Still very early to tell though. But I think my untrained eye agrees with your guesses. The middle one is just too hard to say?
Happy Friday everyone! Am doing my Felfie today....just waiting for it to warm up a bit. I was telling the flock today the plan and Cookie was jumping up and down with her wing raised....pick me...pick me!!!!! lol

TG, congrats on the incubator!! Yay! Also, great advice on the curtains. I may need to try that. MJ, sandy, and Brownie the Easter Eggers love the box that is inside a wooden crate. When they get in there they almost go into mean momma hen mode and growl at anything that passes by. I have to think twice about reaching under them to check for eggs!
re the Incubator...My mom is almost 85. She came over yesterday and that was when we were going to order it but she has clearly forgotten. My brother just had his birthday and she talked about the fact that she hadn't got him his gift yet, last weekend she talked about how she hadn't got me mine and that was when I told her what I wanted. She also talked about what a hard time she had remembering Tom's birthday. She never brought up the Genesis which makes me sad. Not because she isn't giving me a gift, but because she is deteriorating.

Ok im officially a basket case. I put out the chicks at 9 thinking..according to the news, it was supposed to warm up and went to work. I waited and waited but it was still 41 at 12 and very cloudy and windy. So i run home to check. A couple chicks didnt look so good, too cold and i didnt see Molly sitting on them to warm them up. The idea was to put them back up to keep them out of the wind and hoping Molly would warm them up in the coop. So i attempt this by myself.... Hubby usually helps. It was a mess ! I got momma to go in first and closed the door. Here i am on my knees. Chasing chicks...i started putting up the chicks one catch at a time. I forgot I had already grabbed Sassys egg and it broke in my pocket. . It took me forever and I'm covered in poop. Lol. It may have been unnecessary. But better to be safe....lol. Right.

Funny Hope all the fuzz butts are fine!

BOYS!!!!!!!!!!! lots of em...sorry

Aw, TGG!! Your picture also looks just like I pictured you, too! Adorable! And, actually, I do see a bit of a resemblance between you and Cookie after all! ;)

Teila, I don't know, but they sure are cute!! I agree it's looking a bit like Blondie will get to keep her female singer name and the rest might be a boy band, but I'm still saying it's too soon to tell.

TG, sorry about your mom's mental lapses. I lost both my grandmas to alzheimer's and it sucks. But, at least you're getting to enjoy having your mom in your life for a good long time. Pros and cons, but the pros probably win.

MM, I forgot to answer a couple of your questions. I don't know what kind of breed Grace is - she and my other bantams are backyard mutts. But, I do believe she's a bantam blue Andalusian crossed with something crested. If she wasn't so destructive in the garden, she'd be my wonder hen, because she lays relatively huge eggs for her size (medium to large).
And, now I forgot the other question! Speaking of memory loss . . . Oh yeah, yes! Both my Marans have beetle sheen - amazing blue/green/purple sheen that is very hard to capture on film, but is stunning in person. They are both more gorgeous than I had expected them to be. I'm hoping TGG got herself some black marans in her huge hatch.

Goood morning Team Broody! Woo hooo for the weekend!

TGG, not that I would have favourites (wink) but Blondie is just soo cute. The pictures do not do her clown shoes justice, they are pretty impressive. I think/hope she is going to be a beautiful girl and really has me smitten. It is hard to explain but she is just such a sweetheart. I want to squeeze her too! Lol

Don’t be sorry for guessing Boys TG; you are really just confirming my suspicions on 4 of them. Do you think Blondie (the buff) is a boy also?

I read that with the Bantam Pekin Cochins the girls feather up quicker and have longer wing feathers than the boys. If that is true, again Blondie may be a pullet and the only one. She has more feathers and less fluff than the remaining 4 and while her wing feathers are long and already passing her butt fluff, the others all have smaller, rounded wing feathers still only half body length.

Yep, the two darks are definitely screaming roo which is sad. They are all so cute and it will be sad to part with them. I can only hope that the little blue/grey that seems to have us all stumped at the moment is also a pullet. As Liz mentioned, it is a little too soon and time will tell. Definitely not making any decisions at this stage and just loving every moment I get to spend with them.

Aaaw TG, I also am sorry to read about your Mum. It must be sad to watch her go through that but coming from a dysfunctional family, I agree with Liz that it is a pro that you have your mum in your life and so much love. Both my parents are still alive but I ‘lost’ them 20 years ago which was the last time we spoke. Keep your chin up sweetie and enjoy every moment :)

Luv your sense of humour Liz!

Blondie and the Boy Band!

Thanks you guys. It was just the first time it was so obvious you know...Teila I am sorry that you are estranged from your parents. My dad is an alocholic and we go through periods of not interacting any more than we have to but recently he has been easy to be around which makes things nicer for my mom.

I do think Blondie is a pullet and the questionable one looks girly to me too. The two black ones are darling little guys. Sorry you didn't get a mini Cilla but there is always next time. We all need to live vicariously through one another's broody hatches. I have chick envy in a big way!!

DH and I talked about it last night and he helped me remember my desire to only use broodies and why I felt that way...more natural, less hassle and stress and responsibility and guilt. I think I made a mistake the last two hatches by using a variety of types of eggs. Mama gets up with the earlier hatchers and leaves eggs that still need heat. If she is only hatching 1 type of egg they are more likely to hatch within a 24 hour period vs different types of eggs since some hatch more easily and quickly than others.

Anyway I am looking forward to broody fever. Hope it hits soon and hard.
