Hatching with 2 broodies

I am so joining this thread! Such a happy, lovely, positive lot you are! I loved reading your adventures Teila! It is funny how my situation has changed from when I started reading this thread to now :p

I will try to be brief (haha ya right!) I have a lovely little rescued silver laced sebright who has gone broody. I am not even going to tell you the panic I went through when I couldn't get her out of the nesting box! I thought for sure she was egg bound! I never in a million years imagined it would be her to go broody. She was sitting on an egg that I took away and then the next day I thought let's see if she really is and laid it in the nesting box a bit away from her. Came back 10 minutes later and she had scooped it under her! So I left her for a week to see if it was real. While she is still lovely to me boy is she a devil to my other chickens lol I went and got her 4 silkie eggs to sit on Saturday. Saturday evening my milles fleur was in a nesting box...uh oh! So Sunday she was still there so I went to the farm we got her from and got a milles fleur egg and a milles fleur/silkie cross egg. Put them under her and worried how it would go with the 2 of them sitting. (Just to let everyone know Banty my sebright is top of the pecking order and Dot my milles fleur is second. They are the gruesome twosome right until Banty went broody)

Cut to today (Monday) morning and Dot was standing in the middle of the coop when I went out in the morning the eggs cold. I grabbed them and put them under Banty. Dot spent the day hanging out with the frizzles which she normally hates. When Banty came out for her quick drink and food etc Dot puffed right up and the two of them had a mini brawl. I find this very odd. So anyway Banty went back in eventually and come this evening Dot is back in a nesting box on an empty nest. She hasn't laid since Friday I believe. I am wondering if she is doing some kind of sympathy brood? She doesnt seem very committed and the fact that she is being nice to the frizzles makes me think she is lonely for her buddy. Her and Banty are the only ones who sleep on the high roost and now she is alone. I am wondering if that is why she is in the nesting box?

Either way I have clearly lost my mind. I live in town and we are allowed to have 6 chickens..and I have 5 already. I have justified it to myself that all of them probably wont hatch and that even if they do there has to be some boys so they will go find new homes ...sigh...chicken math lol

and Welcome to this happy little thread!!! You are in good company. We all have lost our minds a bit. And just so you know you do not have 5 chickens you have 2.5! Bantams are only .5 so if you only have bantams you are allowed 10. If your city planners have issues you tell them to call me!

Broody drama is real and you sound like you are managing it well. I had eggs go cold when I accidentally locked the broody mama outside the coop and 6 of 7 hatched so don't fret about your cooled eggs. I would give them back to Dot if she decides to commit

I have 3.5 week old silkie/mf d'uccle babies right now. They are very very cute. What color was the silkie involved with your eggs? and is the silkie the mama or the daddy?

I had to move Petunia and her brood (^^^ these chicks) into the broody pen I was saving for Jamie Lee and her hatch because Petunia went psycho on poor little Julie Taylor and I had to isolate her. Julie was traumatized and wouldn't leave the coop if Petunia was around. Now Jamie Lee and her group are in her original pen with her buddies where Petunia and her group were and things are peaceful.

Good Luck with Banty! Glad to have you here!!!

Hi Tommysgirl

and thank you! Dot is decidedly not broody I don't think. I swear she is just copying Banty. Once again she slept in the nesting box but once again she was hanging out in the middle of the coop this morning. She's out with the frizzles now acting all buddy buddy. I am sure they are terrified wondering when she is going to change her mind and go back to her old self! They even ate yogurt and oats off a small plate all together this morning!

The silkie hen for the d'uccle mix was white! The other 4 silkie eggs are a crapshoot really. She had all black hens and a white silkie rooster and a black silkie rooster. So who knows what I will get...maybe an oreo? LOL

I am going to have to go back some and read. I only made it about half way through before I had to post lol I am so happy to hear that about your eggs. I am concerned by the difference in days :s But I guess we shall see

I just went out and took some photos and decided to add them First our coop and run. It is ridiculous for our bantams LOL At least everyone has space from each other I guess. We have a huge backyard so it works well. Excuse it not being painted. We built it a couple months ago in the rainy season :s

The girls in a corner of one of the run "boxes"

And now to the main event! eggs!

And finally Momma on her eggs!

I don't know why the nest looks so high...it is pretty flat!

On another note, panick sunk in when I went to barn this morning I'm only counting 5 babies 5 not 6 where can the other

OH NO!!!!! I have not had this happen but I almost lost one of my 2 day olds. Little stinker sneaked out through a crack under the door of the feed shed and was frantically trying to get back in when I discovered him. I hope she shows up!

Welcome to our broody thread Tulip!

I just had 2 bantys go broody together. First one and then a couple days later the other joined her. They are sharing the same nest box and they even switch the eggs around between the two! They dont fight over them at all, sometimes Taffy will have them and then the next thing I know Freckles has some and so forth. They seem like the best of friends...

Broodies are CRAZY, that is all I really know. Just wait and see what happens, these things always seem to work themselves out in the end. If you have a couple extra chickens who will really know/tell?
And as a matter of fact if you have been reading this thread you will know by now that banties only count as half chickens, chicks and roos dont count at all! Lol
So you really should be ok.

Precious mamas and beautiful birds in general. Guinea Pigs make such cute sounds and yours is darling. What is the gestation period for a Guinea Pig? Good luck with Maddie and Muffin...cute names btw!
