Hatching with 2 broodies

Another fire has just broke out and we can see the flames from our house. This is just not normal, I am starting to think that someone is setting these fires. There must be 8 of them around us now. Too many to be a coincidence.

Prayers have been said from here for you and your neighbors and their pets and properties. If you have boxes or dog crates you can stuff a few birds in each. maybe stick some feed in the 4 runner now. If the evac. order comes there may not be time.

Thanks for the prayers.
I am going to get gas and food for the dogs. I have a couple of bags of food for the chickens.

Wow, 4 pages of posts to catch up on … I love this thread!

OK, so I should be working but it is a little quiet at the moment so I am going to switch between work and socialising; this post could take all day to compile!

Howdy purplesue30 nice to see you pop in

Your predicament is so very well summed up by the term ‘Chicken math’. Yes, it happens a lot.
Sadly, I have had to make a decision to break broodies for a little while at least. I really do not have room for more bubbies and like yourself, I find it really hard to part with them

MM, love your bubbies … yep, no problems identifying the rooster in that pic

IC, beautiful pictures! That Cenere statue is so life-like lolz

Lols TG, I am so giving my City Planners your number!

Welcome halfbakedtulip, wonderful to have you on the Team

Oh dear, the joys of broody chickens, sounds like you are experiencing the whole deal! We have the 'living in town, allowed to have 6 chickens and have 5' in common, same here :)
Sorry, scrolling backwards and forwards through posts here! Is that Banty sitting on the eggs in your picture? She looks like a sweetheart.
For breakfast I feed my 3 adult and 2 bubby bantams 1 coffee mug of fermented coarse grain. Well, I start with the 1 coffee mug and of course, it swells up a bit. They also get some sort of side-dish, maybe lettuce and sausage or peas and corn, pasta, chicken (yep, they eat chicken), hamburger, rice etc etc.
In the afternoon, there is usually a small amount of the FF left and I throw that and some side dish breakfast I held over out in their favourite spot for their afternoon supervised free range.
I do not leave any feed in the run overnight.
I am using the 3 jar, Day 1, 2 and 3 ferment method which TG put me onto .. thank you TG, it is working a treat, they love it!

LM, oh no, sorry to read one of your bubbies has gone missing. I have read of that happening often. Randerson846 had an egg go missing from the incubator! Lolz. Did you ever find that egg Randerson846?
Mumma and bubbies are gorgeous!

CC999 .. aaaaaw, cute little piggies and Team Broody now also has baby piggy pictures to look forward to also

16 paws .. so summed it up beautifully, yep ‘them broodies do be crazy’!

OMG! That is so scary! I have everything crossed for you that the fires are not an issue for you and you do not have to evac. Please, please stay safe .. my thoughts are with you and your little ones xoxo

Thanks Teila,

So far so good, still at home for now but getting ready just in case. Seems like a new fire gets going every hour or so in a different city. The fire dept and Cal Fire cant keep up with it.

Makes you realize what is really important in life.....
Take care everyone!

Hey Team, while I do not have a farm and only have 5 little girls, I was thinking of a name for my tribe and I came up with Bambrook Bantams .. what do you think?

Bambrook is a component of our area, so I thought it was kinda cute?

I'm back ... just wanted to share some pictures I took today of the girls ...

Sorry this one is a little blurry but you all know how hard it is to get a pose. Blondie is now 12 weeks old and if I say so myself, gorgeous! :)

LuLu is 20 weeks old and such a little sweetie .. love her to bits!:

My little feathered beach ball, Cilla (15 months):

Get your sunnies out, it is whiter than white Tina (7 months):

And, to finish, Dusty (with all her feathers). Dusty (15 months) did not want to pose and this is the best I could get out of 30 or so tries and as you can see, I was running out of light!

The pictures do not show it very well but I have really noticed a beautiful shine since switching to the FF.

In other news .. the great egg drought of 2014 continues, I believe it is now about 2.5 months since anyone laid an egg! Had I known there was going to be an egg drought, I would have made a note of the day the last egg was laid

I've been thinking about you 16 paws, I so hope all is OK and you are all safe
hugs.gif

Thinking of you, 16 paws! Please be safe! As I was raking all of the bedding away from the side walls in my coop in preparation for the "3+ inches" of rain we are supposed to get, and undoubtedly feeling a bit down that we won't get to go outside today, I took a moment to step back and think of everyone affected by the fires and that my reason for feeling down is absolutely nothing compared to everyone out west. (excuse the run on sentence) My thoughts any prayers are with everyone, two footed, four footed, feathered and finned. Hoping the fires recede soon and everyone is safe.

Teila, Blondie is absolutely beautiful!! I love her! And I love the name Bambrook Bantams!! If you lived closer, I would paint you a little sign to hang on your coop!!

Hi everyone. Gosh 16 paws- that sounds really scary :-(. Thinking of you and hoping that you stay safe and the fires are dealt with quickly. We have nothing like that in the UK so I can't begin to imagine how it must feel.
Teila- your chickens are gorgeous! I especially love Blondie. Here's a picture of my odd looking cockerel (Marmalade):

I'm having trouble with him actually- he's started attacking us whenever we get close to him :-(
Here's my other cockerel (Esmerelda-odd choice for a 'he') with his female friend (Lavender):

Then we have two like this (Toffee & Brownie) (I can barely tell them apart!):

And two like this (Domino & Happy Feet):

Plus our broody hen (Ebony) (my avatar picture). The kids chose all the names!
All appears to be going well with my hatching. We've now added our new nest box and completely separated the broody hen from the others. I checked the nest whilst Ebony was having a comfort break and there were 13 eggs (originally 12) so I took one unmarked one away. I think next Weds or Thurs is the earliest any will hatch. As I said, my biggest problem is the aggressive cockerel and I'm not sure what we'll do about him. For the moment I'm trying to show him that I'm not scared of him, which is tricky when in actual fact he terrifies me!!
I hope all your flocks are doing well. I was sad to read about the fox attack. It's so horrible to have to experience that :-(
Deb x
