Hatching with 2 broodies

Hey Team, while I do not have a farm and only have 5 little girls, I was thinking of a name for my tribe and I came up with Bambrook Bantams .. what do you think?

Bambrook is a component of our area, so I thought it was kinda cute?

I think that sounds wonderful. Bambrook sounds like something from a fairy tale. You do have your very own farm with your girls, be it big or small there is still the same amount of love.

I snuck out to the coop to top off the feeder so I wouldn't worry if the flock decided to weather the storm in the coop. They probably won't, too many goodies come out of the ground when it rains. I went out when it was sprinkling and came back when it was pouring. I did manage to gather 6 eggs from two of the nest boxes and got a good laugh of the 3 chicken long lines waiting for the others. Some of the girls almost looked like they were crossing their legs! I managed to get a quick pic of the schoolhouse progress. 

There roof is fiberglass, so lots of light. Venting at the top of both gable ends as well as under the eves. The big door is my access and there is a little door on the right that will open into a run. There will be one nest box and a roost inside, though I need to think about the set up some more for efficiency and poop clean-up. The spacing between the board siding will be covered, we are doing board and batten siding. I am so excited!

Hi team broody.

Just a quick update on the fires here.
The governor declared a state of emergency for our county which means the big guns are coming on board to help out. Our poor fire fighters are stretched so thin with a total of nine fires burning around us!
They have done a fantastic job of keeping people evacuated and safe in shelters. They are also working hard to get all the animals out and safe.

The fire is still visible from here but I believe it is moving away from our home at least for now.

Thanks for all the prayers and fingers and toes crossed. It really did help because we are about the only place around us that isnt on fire!

Good thing I am off for the next 2 days as I am ready to roll with the girls and the dogs.

Meanwhile Freckles and Taffy are not letting themselves be bothered with any of this, they are patiently co-brooding away thru the smoke!

I'm back ... just wanted to share some pictures I took today of the girls ...

Sorry this one is a little blurry but you all know how hard it is to get a pose. Blondie is now 12 weeks old and if I say so myself, gorgeous!


LuLu is 20 weeks old and such a little sweetie .. love her to bits!:

And, to finish, Dusty (with all her feathers). Dusty (15 months) did not want to pose and this is the best I could get out of 30 or so tries and as you can see, I was running out of light!


The pictures do not show it very well but I have really noticed a beautiful shine since switching to the FF.

In other news .. the great egg drought of 2014 continues, I believe it is now about 2.5 months since anyone laid an egg! Had I known there was going to be an egg drought, I would have made a note of the day the last egg was laid

I've been thinking about you 16 paws, I so hope all is OK and you are all safe

They are all so beautiful, cant tell which one I like the most. I agree, the ff seems to make them look even more pretty. I think I am going to have to give it a go as soon as things calm down a bit around here.
Sorry you are experiencing an egg drought, just hang in, things will change.

Hi everyone. Gosh 16 paws- that sounds really scary :-(. Thinking of you and hoping that you stay safe and the fires are dealt with quickly. We have nothing like that in the UK so I can't begin to imagine how it must feel.
Teila- your chickens are gorgeous! I especially love Blondie. Here's a picture of my odd looking cockerel (Marmalade):

I'm having trouble with him actually- he's started attacking us whenever we get close to him :-(
Here's my other cockerel (Esmerelda-odd choice for a 'he') with his female friend (Lavender):

Then we have two like this (Toffee & Brownie) (I can barely tell them apart!):

And two like this (Domino & Happy Feet):

Plus our broody hen (Ebony) (my avatar picture). The kids chose all the names!
All appears to be going well with my hatching. We've now added our new nest box and completely separated the broody hen from the others. I checked the nest whilst Ebony was having a comfort break and there were 13 eggs (originally 12) so I took one unmarked one away. I think next Weds or Thurs is the earliest any will hatch. As I said, my biggest problem is the aggressive cockerel and I'm not sure what we'll do about him. For the moment I'm trying to show him that I'm not scared of him, which is tricky when in actual fact he terrifies me!!
I hope all your flocks are doing well. I was sad to read about the fox attack. It's so horrible to have to experience that :-(

I have noticed my girls all look better on FF too and the chicks pop out of the eggs so healthy! Your girls are just lovely and I think you name choice is wonderful...agree it sounds like a spot out of Middle Earth.

Hi Deb...so sorry your cockerel is giving you a hard time. I have a mean boy and I have to arm myself when I go down to meddle around in his pen. He has never made contact but he has rushed me so now I direct him inot the coop with a long stick before I open the door and reach in. Not meaning to offend anyone but he isn't long for this world. I am getting a replacement this summer. Same breed, better quality and a honey according to his current owner

Your birds are beautiful! What do you call the lacing on Brownie and Toffee? Are they Wyandottes? I don't even know if you can get Wys in the UK but Blue Laced Red are on my list. I LOVE the pattern and coloring!

Looking good MM. I need to share pics of my coop progress. Your H sure pays attention to detail! It is nearly done. We need to do the Eastern side and attach the hardware cloth to the Southern side. Our weather comes from the west and the north so those sides are solid. I am going to paint all three of our coops this summer inside and out. It is supposed to help keep away the creepy crawlies.


In my news I believe I have yet another broody. My speckeled sussex Theresa (who is named after Mother Theresa because I wanted to name her after a famous mother to increase the odds that she would become one herselff and who I call her Sweet T because she is so sweet and friendly) was in the nest box when I got home yesterday and growled at me when I took the eggs. She spent the night in the box but got up this morning for breakfast and was broodying about like they do. I will see what the story is when I get home today and if she is still at it tomorrow I will plan on giving her about 6 eggs from my olive egger, Willa

I just had my broody silkies hatch her own 3 eggs. I put 2 eggs under her that were hatching the same time as hers, and of course we're incubated eggs. So she has hatch and has 5 chicks. Now my other two silkies want kids! My roosters better start working! They want kids! Trust your hens. Put them in the dark seperated... that what I had to do cause they were terrorizing my other hens...

Oh I'm so glad you are all good as well as the Girlz and boyz and of course the six lovely Yorkies that's good to hear the fire is moving away from your house oh and lovely broodys by the way they look very happy and determined.
