Good morning Team Broody … woo hooo for Saturday; quick tidy up inside and then outside to read my book and supervise an all day free range (OK, so the book is just an excuse to stalk chickens!)

IC, What? Cenere is thinking of laying an egg? Yeah, you should not have told me! lol.

Two and a half months since seeing an egg is beyond ridiculous. I am not holding out much hope of seeing one in the near future either. The only real candidates for egg laying are Dusty and Cilla and with the shorter daylight hours, molts, bubbies etc, I will not be surprised if it is another 2.5 months

DebOBE, good to hear that the chickens do not stand still for professionals either lol

Cilla’s first hatch I left her with two chicks, one of which we still have 7 months later (Tina) and her second hatch I left her with one (Blondie). I can only imagine how distraught she would be if I took them all from her. She did not appear too distressed by the staggered removal of bubbies, but seemed content to continue mothering the remainders.

Having said that, when Tommy moved away to his new home, I am positive she missed him a great deal and both her and Blondie were looking/calling for him .. very sad

OK, time to enjoy my day … look out girls, here I come!

When you have broodies, you tend to forget you have eggs in the bator.... I went to check on my 1 egg and i picked it up and i heard chirping!!! LIKE OMGOSH!!!! I didn't know it was due today!

So while it was only yesterday I started the FF on the counter I made wayyy too much so decided to try them this morning. They liked it! Hopefully this will translate into some eggs again! They also don't really eat very much I see lol

On a totally different note...We have a mourning dove who is acting really weird. It roosts in the tree above our yard and when the chickens go out to free range it swoops down and tries to integrate itself into the flock. It doesn't want their BOSS at all. It actually waits until they are done their snack before it comes down. I really am at a loss and am terrified it is trying to find a mate in one of my chickens?? My only other thought is that it may have been someones pet at one point. Either way it is bizarre.

On to something that may be controversial in here but I know some of you are frizzle owners so I figure it is the best place to air my thoughts. We got our frizzles a couple months ago. They are now a year old. The do not lay. 2 of them are a team and 1 of them is left by herself. she sleeps by herself, goes out by herself etc... she just can't seem to find her place or a friendly face. All 3 of them are on a never ending molt and all 3 are terrified of EVERYTHING and they are so loud ack! I could never imagine that such little birds could have such big sounds. Of course I love the odd lady out because I am a sucker for sad sacks lol. I guess I just want you to give me reasons to love them lol I am seriously considering finding a new home for them. I really thought I was going to be so thrilled with them and I am just so not. So tell me why you love your frizzles!

HBT ... I have only been a Frizzle mum for 3 weeks. LuLu is my first ever Frizzle and yep, I love her. I have heard some strange noises coming from her but most of the time she is still only peeping, being only 5 months old. She is a sweetheart! She has bonded with Tina and Tina has definitely bonded with her, doing the mum-thing. Her and Blondie (1 month age difference) get along fine and while Dusty and Cilla could not be described as her best mates, they tolerate her and everyone hangs together with no dramas.

Cilla is the matriarch and Dusty is second in line to the throne.

Lulu has the sweetest little personality and out of the 5 of them, is probably the most easy going and not skittish at all (none of my girls are really skittish though). She is my Hubby's new favourite girl

He chuckles at the way all her little feathers bounce around when she runs lol.

Sorry to go on but you did ask why I loved her lol.

It could be that she is an only Frizzle or it could be that she is still only a bubby or, I could have just struck it lucky She is so adorable and I love her to bits!

A funny thing happened in the garden today. Ziggy, next doors overweight, old cat came into our back garden while the girls were supervised free ranging (that is why I always supervise). Ziggy cannot jump fences and normally just squeezes through a gap in the back fence. I pop over to Ziggys house and brush and feed him when his Dad is away, but when his Dad is home, Ziggy wants nothing to do with me and runs away if he sees me. Basically, he is OK if I visit him in his house but not outside. Anyway, I was reading and did not see him come in but the girls sounded the alarm and scattered. I jumped up to see what was wrong and saw Ziggy on our lawn. By this time, I was between Ziggy and his escape route; he was looking around, real spooked, trying to work out how to get away without having to go past me and decided to exit left. Ziggy didn't see the goldfish pond!!! One dripping wet pussy cat was last seen disappearing back over to his house. I wonder what his Dad was thinking when a dripping wet Ziggy presented

PS. The girls are fine. It was no big deal really; Ziggy is pretty cool and too old, fat and lazy to chase anything. He was probably just looking for a nice sunny spot to sleep. Not sure he was planning on a swim though

I LOVE watching mine run! They are ridiculous haha. And I love that they look like they are wearing onesies.

I have always struggled to figure out who is on top in our flock. The Delawares are the bossiest but the Red stars have this quiet dignity and I think that really they are in charge. The Australorps are both above the Rock and the Speckled Susses who share bottom billing in that pen at the moment.

In my other pen everyone was so mellow that it is hard to figure who is on top but it is easy to see that after her motherhood stint poor Norma is clearly on the bottom. She is so unhappy that I let her out first thing in the morning to range all day away from mostly Blanche who is turning into a bossypants and from Jamie Lee Curtis who seems to allow everyone close to her bubbs BUT Norma. Anyway. Norma has always been a drama queen but it has been a bad week for her...I know things will be OK for her but right now she is figuring out where she belongs and she doesn't really know where that is. supposed to be.

The nice thing about FF is that you don't have to wait until it is fully fermented. Even soaking it overnight increases the nutritional value of the feed.

I don't think you should feel badly about considering rehoming your sizzles. I had a similar relationship with my Icelandics. i wanted them soooo badly then I got them and they just didn't do it for me. I sold them in January to a colleague who is going to breed them and they are doing just fine for him but they were so skittish I was annoyed. I spent hours working with all of my pullets trying to to them all to if not be my friends at least trust that I wasn't going to twist their heads off but those two never warmed up.

I have a black sizzle and she won me over by literally snuggling in when I picked her up for the first time. She doesn't yet hop on my lap or anything but she isn't skittish.

My Dorkings and Petunia who is a Dorking cross are my noisiest croakers but with all of the bird noises we have here I don't really notice.

Gracie Belle was sitting in a nest box refusing to leave this morning...she lives in the same pen as JLC and her brood so maybe another one will fall to broody fever soon. She is so little I don't know how many eggs she can cover. Maybe three LF and Five Bantam. I hope she holds off until I am out of school and can go pick her up some bantam cochin eggs. They are about 2 hours away.

Speaking of...there are only 9 more days of school!!!!!

I have 1 Frizzle named Taffy. We got her at about 3 or 4 days old to put under a broody, ( Buff Orpington), Savanna that was sitting on non fertile eggs. She and the 5 other bantams came from a breeder. Savanna raised them and intregrated them into the rest of the flock.
She is so precious. Just fit in with the rest of the flock fine. Not skittish or loud and very docile. She is about 8 months old now is is currently co- brooding with one of her other hatch mates Freckles. Great eye candy also.
They are a riot to watch co-brooding.When one gets up to stretch, dust and take a potty break the other one will scoot all of the eggs under her. Then when the other gets back they somehow divide the eggs up again between the two. Cutest thing!

Hi team broody!

Well, 4 days to go until hatch, I believe. Cant wait! Hope this one goes better than the last disaster!

No cracked eggs so far either.
The girls are sitting tight and made it thru the heat wave and fires great. 35 degrees cooler today. Glad that is behind us now. Cant tell you how great it is to see blue sky's again instead of smoke and flames all around us. Yippee!


The girls seem to be pulling a lot of straw and placing it over themselves so I hope they are getting ready for something big to happen. I decided not to candle at all this time. Just let nature takes its course and pray.

I felt like such a clumsy robber last time I candled I decided against it this time Lol

Well in other broody news, I have another one!

My Black Tailed Buff Japanese has been broody for about 4 days now. Her name is Pancake. The name is because when she is broody she flattens herself out like a pancake. She is a tiny little thing. She is sitting on 2 wood eggs right now.
