Hatching with 2 broodies

I have 1 Frizzle named Taffy. We got her at about 3 or 4 days old to put under a broody, ( Buff Orpington), Savanna that was sitting on non fertile eggs. She and the 5 other bantams came from a breeder. Savanna raised them and intregrated them into the rest of the flock.
She is so precious. Just fit in with the rest of the flock fine. Not skittish or loud and very docile. She is about 8 months old now is is currently co- brooding with one of her other hatch mates Freckles. Great eye candy also.
They are a riot to watch co-brooding.When one gets up to stretch, dust and take a potty break the other one will scoot all of the eggs under her. Then when the other gets back they somehow divide the eggs up again between the two. Cutest thing!

Sorry about all the bragging.

Freckles is in front and that is the roo Poppy giving the evil eye in the back.

Great picture Marie. Taffy is darling! We are all about the bragging here so no worries. :)

Marie what day are Freckles and Taffy on?

I gave Sweet T her eggs this morning 8 of them and if I get another olive egg I will slip her that one too. They all should be sex linked. The olive ones not so much at hatch but by the end of the first week the little boys should have barring and the little girls will be all red. The other eggs are all either Dorking or CA Grey with either Ozzie or the General as the Daddy. Probably the General though as he was housed with the mamas and they only ranged with Ozzie.

Darned Godiva has been teasing me. buck buc bucking for weeks and yesterday she sat all day in the nest box. I was excited but...alas her love of calories won over her desire for motherhood once again and when I fed them their bedtime snack she was out of the nest box like lightening. Now that girl could cover about 18 eggs. She is huge. I want to know if she will be any good as a broody if she ever commits.

So what do you guys think about what sort of eggs I should hatch with my next proven girl?

The Bantam Cochins? More CA Greys? or the Pita Pintas? I am totally torn.

Yay!!! But we have drama here...Within an hour or of me giving Sweet T her her eggs, Beakface, our broody who raised 2 clutches of BOYS has taken over the nest and eggs. T has moved to another nest box back on golf balls...sigh. I am not sure what to do if it continues but maybe it won't maybe BF is just being bratty and staking a temporary claim of "Her Nest"

How many eggs did you put under Pancake? I gave T 10. She is a pretty big girl and I think she can manage. Nothing was sticking out. Beakface has them all covered too.

If BF continues I will probably order eggs from someone...don't want shipped eggs but I may have no choice. It is a busy time of year and the cochin breeder is 2 hours away. Maybe I will just let them both go and go get day olds for BF when school is out in two weeks....there may be nothing to worry about I will let time tell.

Good Luck! what kind of eggs are you giving her?

I think I gave her 8, half Polish, 1 EE and the rest I dont know. Polish roo.

I forgot to add that I have a squirrel living under one of my coops. It is the coop that Pancake is brooding in. When I have the door open to let the banties out it has been going in the coop. I believe it took Pancakes egg that I was going to set under her. I found an egg shell in the run and I am sure it was that darn squirrel!

The coop is on a cement foundation and it has dug a hole from the run under the foundation of the coop. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of the #@&^%#@!! thing?

Tommysgirl,
I am not surprised about the drama already. Seems to be non stop around here Lol
I bet it will work itself out thou. Bumpy start means a good finish!

Tommysgirl,
Were we just talking about drama?
Well here is the latest.
I was checking on the co-broodies and I noticed an egg laying outside the nest box. I said to myself how in the world did that get out there. I went to pick it up and it had a crack and a small hole in it. I could see a baby chick inside it! It freaked me out because i didnt expect to see anything. As I was holding it I smelled a bad smell coming from it. I decided to put it back in the nest and then thought better of it. What if it explodes on all the other eggs? So I put it back ouside the nest box so I could be sure it wasnt trying to hatch out. I know this sounds weird but I didnt know what to do with it.

Later, because I am too soft hearted to see it, I had my husband go down there and open it up.
He said it looked like it had died a while ago, hence the smell.
I am wondering what happened to it???????
I guess the girls knew it wasnt going to hatch and got rid of it but how did it get cracked and a piece of the shell was missing?

We shall see what the next few days bring. I am starting to wonder what is going on here....

No other chickens can get to them as they are in their own coop along with the roo Poppy.

Hum.......
