Hatching with 2 broodies

Tommysgirl,
Were we just talking about drama?
Well here is the latest.
I was checking on the co-broodies and I noticed an egg laying outside the nest box. I said to myself how in the world did that get out there. I went to pick it up and it had a crack and a small hole in it. I could see a baby chick inside it! It freaked me out because i didnt expect to see anything. As I was holding it I smelled a bad smell coming from it. I decided to put it back in the nest and then thought better of it. What if it explodes on all the other eggs? So I put it back ouside the nest box so I could be sure it wasnt trying to hatch out. I know this sounds weird but I didnt know what to do with it.

Later, because I am too soft hearted to see it, I had my husband go down there and open it up.
He said it looked like it had died a while ago, hence the smell.
I am wondering what happened to it???????
I guess the girls knew it wasnt going to hatch and got rid of it but how did it get cracked and a piece of the shell was missing?

We shall see what the next few days bring. I am starting to wonder what is going on here....

No other chickens can get to them as they are in their own coop along with the roo Poppy.

Hum.......

Yesterday's broody drama is over. It may repeat today but what I think is happening is Beakface is forcing T out of the nest while she lays her egg and then, just to prove that she is top chick she stays there for a good long while. Then T goes back when BF vacates. As long as the eggs are being kept warm I am OK...I wouldn't call it co brooding but it is working so far.

I think you are right that the egg was given the toss b/c it was a quitter. Sometimes they just stop growing in the shell. I have heard before of that happening, hens getting rid of the bad eggs. I hope the rest are fine and pop out of those shells like popcorn

I spent some time trying to get pics of the 4 week old silkie/d'uccle babies. Petunia gets between us at every opportunity so the pics are not great. I tried to get them with the sun on them and the ivy in the background but this is all I could get.

Can you see the Clown Shoes! They are seriously overgrown They have hard feathers on their legs so they are different than silkie "pants."

Aww they are beautiful TG!

Hey Team Broody,
So the hatch date for my three eggs under Muffin are due to hatch on Friday and I'm very excited everyone is doing good. Well we got a noise complaint yesterday but have sorted that out and have made Muppet a cockerel box inside the coop so thats good I will be posting some pics of the crew tomorrow so all six eggs under my two moody broodys are looking very promising so I have my fingers crossed for them.
Hope all is well for everyone
Ella

Just stopping by to say a quick hello - we have family visiting this week, so I'll likely be missing in action for the next few days as well, no time at all!

Tommysgirl those silkies crosses and their clown shoes are absolutely gorgeous!!!!!

Marie, sorry to hear about the egg that didn't make it. They probably did discard it, and it traveled a bit... I imagine how upsetting it is to find that though!

Ella, can't wait to see the new arrivals!

I'll catch up with the rest of the posts in a few days, hopefully! And hope everyone else is doing well.

Two, no, three bits of news over here:

1. Cenere laid an egg today! Unfortunately that also means she's done playing mom, and chases away the chicks when they try to jump on her like they used to...

2. The chicks, or rather, the two suspected future roos had a bit of a squabble over something today, and the gray(blue-brown-red - not sure what to call him anymore as he's getting all kinds of colors coming through) ended up with some blood above his eye. I checked, it's nothing major, just a scratch, not sure if I should try disinfecting as it is SO close to the eye... thoughts?

3. I somehow managed the whole candling thing a bit better this time, and it looks like out of 16 eggs in the bator, 13 are developing, 2 are clear, and 1 I just can't seem to see a thing (it's a darker one, there is an air cell, but that's as much as I can tell). I'll try with Bonnie's eggs maybe tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed that they all keep developing! I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing with the bator, so very afraid to mess it up!!!

Ok, gotta run, I still follow everything, just not much time for writing - but I'll be back with a vengeance soon enough!
