Hatching with 2 broodies

Well I think today will be the coop cleaning/setup day. God willing we will have little bantam babies hatching in 6-7 days.

I will try to quietly replace the shavings and wipe down the coop walls, also need to set up the pen area for the babies. Should probably also give them a spray of frontline to ward off mites/bugs before the chicks arrive. Hopefully i can do all of this without upsetting the broodies too much! The older hen seems to be turning into a puffed up broodzilla.

I usually lock the others out of of the covered pen when she takes her daily break so I can give her a dish of wet food including yogurt, avian vitamins, and liquid b12 to help combat the stress and low caloric intake. if the other birds come near her, near her food, if they even look at her she screams at them. I hope she calms down after the chicks arrive but I doubt if she will.

I have dealt with two Broodies, this summer. One has a week old chick and the other is still sitting. They are both puffed up, and don't seem to even know who I am. They peck, the scream, the cuss! But they are awesome Moms and egg sitters. I was wondering how long the Momma's craziness is going to last. The are both Buff Orpingtons.

Good morning Team Broody

As I type, Cilla is announcing to the neighbourhood that she is going to lay an egg some time this morning. That will be #7 since she broke the egg drought; a couple more and she will be broody again!

IC congrats on Ombretta’s post broody egg .. Blondie is still Cilla’s little shadow and just shy of 5 months old.

KF I have been blessed with a broody who does not scream or attack and is quite happy for me to pick her up and check out the chicks etc; granted she is not as accommodating if the other girls were to get close. With regards the ‘craziness’, I have no idea sorry; Cilla has been my only broody to date and as she is matriarch, she tends to always be a tad on the bossy side

I have no news really. After getting hubby to reposition one of the roosts in the Ranch apartment yesterday I have now had to make a promise that I will not ask for any more remodelling or hubby-involved-chicken-projects for the remainder of the year! That should not be too hard, I am happy with how everything is now and if I do have some minor tweaks, I should be able to do them

Wow, sounds like you really take good care of your broodies! I love it. I guess I should be doing the same...
I have 3 broodys now. I was just wondering where you get frontline spray? I have only heard of the drops you put on the dogs back. Does it come in a spray and where do you get it please? The vitamins sound good also, how much b12? I guess I have very calm broodies compared to broodzilla there. Mine let me reach under them and take their eggs without out too much fuss at all. All their chickenalities are all so different arent they. I bet she will calm down a bit after the chicks arrive. If not I feel sorry for the rest of the flock

Layla is due to hatch next Sunday. Are yours due on Friday or Saturday? Layla is sitting on Basque and Brabanter eggs. Yippee...cant wait to see what happens, she started with 7 but now has 6 since one broke early on.

Oh, I forgot to tell everyone that Penny my Jersey Giant is broody AGAIN!!!!! She is crazy! She just had some babies a couple months back....

So Layla, Blue Cochin, first time broody
Sophia, white crested black polish, first timer
And Penny, Jersey Giant, 5 time broody in 2 years I believe
Now I have to plan this out right in case the chicken police come to visit and count. Hummmmmm
wonder where I can hide a few chicks????

Aaaaw, AnnaBelle is adorable and I love that she is obsessed with her chickens; now I wonder who she gets that off?

TG’s ‘chicken count’ dictates that chicks do not count!

I have a little bit of news .. Cilla laid her 7th post broody egg today and I may have underestimated her determination as a broody. I was thinking maybe 10 eggs before she crosses over into the broody zone but today, after she laid that egg, I had to boot her out of the nest box 3 times! She was hunkered down with Blondie faithfully sitting with her! OK, the temptation of a supervised free range with the flock eventually broke her but I do not know for how long .. time will tell

I never heard of the spray either (have always used the drops on my dogs). The show breeder I got the older bantam hens from told me about it, the spray is marketed for puppies and kittens, he told me to give them a squirt under each wing and on the vent, he said one treatment lasts several months. I was surprised to learn that my local ace hardware carried it.




The liquid b12 is made especially for chickens/roosters, the dose is 1 cc to 3 cc's for a Rooster. There is a whole supplement line made by Rooster Booster (obviously developed for fighting cocks and also used for show birds). I think a lot of feed stores carry it, I ordered it online. I also give them the Poultry Booster mixed in with their feed, unfortunately the poultry booster is in pellet form and they don't like pellets so i had to grind it all up in the food processor.

Yup....Saturday is the 21st day. I am nervous! Guess we will both hopefully be having some little miracles next weekend! At this point I believe we have 8, 3 under a broody and 5 in an incubator.
