You should definitely meet my broody hen. She will sit on every single egg ever hatched and also collect them from various places. I have to break her brood at least 6-8 times through the year.
Haha! No, I just remove her completely from the coop (where sheās not able to see the coop at all) and put her in her own crate in the goat shed with her food and water for two to three days. And sheās good to return to her flock again.but at least she is a good Mama! Do you cold water dunk her to break her of it?
Oh yes, most definitely! Iāve already been down the ātoo many roosterā alley and will not be going down that path again. Not something I want to witness ever again. And especially since I flipping adore every single bird Iāve had in the last 3 years, nobody is fighting at my house. Well, expect for my spoiled dogs, but other than that, I wonāt have my birds fighting.Hello Jana, and welcome to BYC!Glad you joined.
DEFINITELY. You need to remove all but the best cockerel and give the boys to your uncle too.
Iāve been doing this for 3 years. Many were hatched by my ridiculously broody hen, I accidentally acquired a few from tractor supply as well. But, I swear, it was mostly my hen hatching babies. Iād rather the mama chicken hatch and take care of the babies. Itās survival of the fittest around my house, so when she hatches them, sheās fiercely protective over them, and thatās a good thing.3 -> 38??! In one year?? Wow, that's a successful hatch rate!
