my duckling has spent the last 2 days hatching its finally graced us with an appearence but im concerned about its leg one is moving, i mean its not steady by any means, but im expecting that, but the other leg isnt moving it wont straighten out. looks like it moves from hip, but i've even gently tried to move it and cant. is this normal for a hatchling . im used to all this on a comercial scale so unfortunately in that circumstance the duckling wouldnt get a look in but its my only duckling i had 6 eggs but 5 didnt develop

and what would i do it keeps trying to move but is ending up using its elbow poor little thing

Sad to read about the little one's troubles.

Duckyfromoz has posted some information about dealing with slipped tendon. Perhaps you could do a search of the archives and see what turns up.

Meanwhile, a very few minutes at a time of closely supervised floating in warm water (at this age, he or she may not be able to float that well, but it's worth a try) might help, as it would take weight off the leg.

Some kind of wrapping, done very carefully not to cut circulation, might help but that is just a guess at this point.

You might also try making a new thread, something like, "how did you deal with slipped tendon?" to see if you can find the people who have handled it before.

My duckling has a similar issue with slipped tendons in both legs. I had some vet wrap on hand, ripped it into 1" strips, gently pulled the leg straight, checked to make sure the tendon was in the right spot and lightly wrapped it. The wrapping has given her enough support to walk on her own. However I change them daily because she is growing. It will be a long process, but they will thank you in the end.

This is Squeaker, both of the tendons in her legs slipped. see near her tail? That is orange vet wrap.

i cant even straighten the leg its like theres just no movement in the joint

i'll see if i can get more up but heres a start it's a bit tired after struggling to get out of the shell for 2 days
