We considering purchasing a battery operated Havahart fence to help with ensuring that raccoons, foxes etc. do not enter the outside pen the only access to the coop is pop out door. Does anyone have any opinion positive/negative about this type of electric fence. Thanks for your advice.

Make sure it is not continuous current.

If you have a lowes near by you can put together your own kit for just a few dollars more than those kits.

ss-550 which is a pulsed current 1 sec on 1 sec off -- 58.00

step in temp post -- $2.00 each
10 to 20 feet apart
-- these work great for temp fences -- metal post with plastic insulators are better for perm installations.

250 feet of aluminum wire about $4.00

For temp use I hang the energizer on the pole and hang a 5 gallon bucket over it.

You can also use it to contain the chickens & ducks -- once trained they will avoid the wire.

BE CAREFUL with continuous current energizers with small animals like cats chickens, ducks -- will get shocked but not able to get away -- they looked glued to the wire -- the pulse energizers allow them to get shocked and then get away.

That makes me want one!

If I may, I'd recommend polywire over aluminum .. In my experience, aluminum tends to sag over time and it kinks and breaks, is a pain to pull around corners and...it's just a pain in general. Plus, it goes up once and it's pretty much done...there's just no good way to re-use aluminum wire for a fence.

The polywire, on the other hand, doesn't seem to stretch or sag, and it doesn't kink.. If it breaks, you literally just tie it back together. If you ever need to take it down and move it or anything like that, you just coil it back up like you would a piece of twine.

Polywire is more expensive, but still...I'll never use aluminum again.
