Hmm, I've got no problem with getting rid of the yellow jackets, but bees? I wonder if it would be possible to drill a hole in the cap that would be small enough to exclude bees but let in flies?

I make and use those. I have never caught bees in mine, just WASPS and yellow jackets. I think that is what they meant. Wasps can't fly back out because of the way their wings work, like they can't take off straight up. I think bees can actually get out or just aren't interested. The only other thing I have seen around my traps is hummingbirds. We have loads of bees around, just not interested in these traps I guess.

Thanks for the feedback. I was just a bit concerned considering the status of our native bees. I even hesitate on killing wasps now, knowing that they too do some pollinating, albeit not nearly as efficient as honeybees or humble bumbles. Thanks for sharing your experience with the traps.

Our bee population here is pretty good! We did have a swarm on our front porch last year

I'm allergic to wasp or wouldn't consider bothering them either, but they bother me

I'm glad that you have a good bee population up there. I can remember that when I was a kid honeybees were a regular thing in the summertime, nowadays it seems that you sporadically hear of a swarm but there are few individual bees seen. Maybe not as many naturally hives scattered across the land??

As for the wasps...I don't blame you a bit in the world for...ain't nothin' like anaphylactic shock to ruin an afternoon!

I think the bees don't have as much chance in a lot of places. Think of how many yards have turned from natural clover to sod over the last few decades. There just isn't as much food supply for them out in the open. Very few people plant flowers anymore, it's landscaped bushes and small shrubs, not flowers. We have run the bees away from our domain by changing it too much to suit ourselves. Nevermind erradicating Dandelions as much as possible

My yard is a happy Dandelion/clover/lily/rose/azalea bee shmorgasborg. I think that is why I still see so many of them.

Bees aren't attracted to rotting meat/protein so they won't be interested. Yellowjackets and wasps will be attracted to the protein.

The reason you will see hummingbirds is because they eat flies. It's all good.

I use 20 oz soft drink/water bottles to make a trap. June bugs were horrible the last two years. I make a hole in the neck large enough for the bugs to climb in, put some fruit that has fallen from our trees (what the June bugs are after) in the bottle and add water, tie twine around the neck of the bottle and hang in the fruit trees where they are attacking the fruit. When the bottle gets full, throw it in the garbage.

Also use tuna or cat food in same bottles to trap flies...put the meat in and add water and hang in various places around the yard.

I have flies on my enclosed porch that are coming in the house when the door is open to the porch. DH brought home something from TSC...a very sticky tape that is suppose to have a lure. It is helping in my kitchen...Geez...have never had so many flies. They are all over our yard...they came in last week when we had a 'cold' front come in and brought unstable air.
