Have-A-Heart! Going down-hill day by day...

I'm cutting her butt feathers off because she's been pooping ( solid ) , but it gets stuck to her tail feathers. All of the sudden I see blood and I'm like OMG what did I do! And she just sat there chilling... So I thought, but she didn't react to the pain...? I looked up close after I finished cutting EVERY feathers around her vent down to the nub and no blood on her skin, cuts or wounds! So I inspected all of the stuff I cut off and there's almost an " egg " looking thing about the size of a pecan. So confused! It looks like a jelly donut and the blood inside is jelly! I thought maybe since she has been stressed she might had laid a soft-shell, but no this thing has blood inside she has no yolk in her poop or nothing! could she had pooped an organ out from internal injuries???

Ok, wrapped her up super tight in a blanket and opened her eye. The " onion " looking thing I saw came out! It's just like a squishy peice of something!? Lol maybe scar tissue, but there's still something in the way! Her blinking muscles are still SUPER swelled. I'm going to get a warm rag and hold it over. Hopefully will reduce swelling!

It's probably infection, and you be sure 'n keep your hands away from your face when you're handling her. We tend to forget, and scratch itches and wipe sweat, and move hair ... and, you're on your way to have a doc treat your own eye.

A few things that work best for the eyes ...

  • The biggest/cheapest saline solution for contact lenses you can find, to squirt into eyes 'n wounds 'n such as a general flush.
  • Johnson and Johnson's 'no more tears' baby shampoo, dripped onto/into something else before you handle the bird, so as to never contaminate the bottle. Using just the smallest spot is usually enough to suds up, and work the suds directly into the eye. And, rinse again ... back 'n forth is fine.
  • The Original Neosporin (never use the one w/ pain reliever, as it's toxic to birds). It's not buffered to match the pH, so it stings a little, but works exactly as well as their prescription opthalmic solution. Again? Squeeze about the size of a pencil eraser onto something else, rather than takin' the tube anywhere near the bird. Do this at least once, or twice, daily. A better alternative, which I just purchased, is Terramycin w/ Bacitricin Opthalmic Ointment (bought four tubes off eBay for $3.50 each).
