Have a trapped bird but I can;t do anything feel awful.( UPdate)

Do you have a net you could put on a really long piece of vinyl trim----that way it would go easily through the chimney, and maybe you could net the poor thing. I'm glad I'm not in your situation, I'd probably wait until Hubby wasn't looking and try to take part of the chimney off! Good luck.

Sorry no I can;t get the vac up there just the odd angle as it kind of goes back a way from the pot belly to the bit outside the wall that then turns up. Sadly he is about 2 foot up there so he isn;t even on the bend but above it. We thought of a lot of those things too! But they just don;t work. There is a cap on the top as well. I thought about a chimeny sweep brush but I don;t have one and you have to book a sweep and they wont come out and bother to save a bird they pull down nests full of baby ones each year so they are not bothered about this fellow. It bothers me a great deal and I am so upset about it but have to get on tending the family and doing ordinary things and putting the little fellow out of my mind. I do hope he dies soon and doesn;t suffer too much longer. I can;t even reach him to end his life what a shame. I have nothing that will get to him either to push him up or down.

n - Thnaks so much for all the thoughts it is incredibly hard to just do nothing and wait. I sooooo hate that. But then if I could would I spend a couple of hundred getting the chimeny down to possible rescue a bird that is probably unsaveable - or spend it on my daughter whos just having our firs t grandchild? Hard isn;t it???????
DH is right there is little can be done and we just have to leave the light on and the fire open and hope he makes his own way out. DH has tried but the chimeny is riveted at every joint and simply doesn;t move.

Thanks everyone for thinking of us through this bad experience.

DH finally got the bottom of the chimeny off today - we were afraid that the bird would block the chimeny. - It was really hard work and not soemthing DH with a bad heart should have been at really. Anyhow once we got it off it was clear why the little bird had not fallen all the way down. THe bottom of the chimeny was blocked solid with thick Black soot - maybe he had dislodged it on the way down anyhow it was well blocked - we now have a broken chimeny! Sadly we found the poor wee fellow he had died in the soot. - it was a lovely little starling. I cannot imagine how horrible a death for the wee chap but I know even if DH had managed to get the chimeny appart that day the bird would have died after inhaling the soot. I picked it up and dusted it off so we could take a last look at its pretty feathers. I felt the need to say sorry to the poor thing that we had not managed to save it. -

We are getting the chimeny fixed and a turn bit with a hatch so we can clean it from the outside and if anything gets stuck in it again we can open the bottom and free it so this never happens again. DH says its done us a big favour as he didn;t realise the chimeny was so thick with soot as it was only cleaned out before we lit it last november and its not been used since March!

Oesdog, I am sorry to hear of the bird's death, and I know the broken chimney is an expense, but it certainly sounds as if the bird gave its life to save yours!!!! A clogged chimney is very dangerous! Both for fire and for proper ventilation! Now you know and are forced to get the situation fixed. Birdy did you a great kindness. Thank his spirit and let it go.
