Have been using sand in the run for 3 mons..now what?

When the heavens move me to do so, I simply scatter it by hand thinly until the entire surface is covered. As for digging/turning, except for once or twice a year, I let the chickens do that. All I do is spread bird seed with corn, black oil seeds, etc. over the run. You'll be amazed how chickens can turn what looks like compacted sand if they think there's possibly a sunflower seed somewhere below. Remember that they have dinosaur claws.
Please don't ask me where three years of poo are/went because I ask myself that all the time and can't figure it out.

I have had the hardest time finding food grade DE around here....There is 1 feed store about 35 mins from my house & they don't always have it in stock...I tried to ship some & it was going to cost me $50 for a small bag through the mail.

Joe, I can't understand where my poo is either, which is the thing that surprises me. I know the chickens turn the sand over & I do rake a lot...I just had these nice visions of scopping stuff out & putting it in my compost, garden, etc.

I am definitely buying some type of construction grade sand this weekend & scooping out most of the sand with the rocks. I'm going to line the insides with wood that I have so that less spills out of the run and am hoping to add a foot or so of sand back in there...

This has been a great thread..thanks for all of the discussion!
