Have Just Put Eggs In Tonight 9th August 2011, Anyone Want To Join?

About 4 hours ago, I collected all eggs (including the two duds that should've hatched two days ago) from the henhouse. Then, I stuck a bucket in my broody's spot so she couldn't lay in that particular nesting box.

I've checked on her twice, and so far, she's been out with the other girls. Poor girl is skinny though, I'm going to try to give her some extra treats to fatten her up.

I also sealed the dud eggs in a ziploc bag and cracked them open. One never developed, and the other looks like it quit around 6-8 days. I'm glad I checked, I would've gone crazy wondering if I should've given the one just a little more time.

Think my egg is dead.

Its now developed a grey grease spot on the outer shell with greasy looking lines emanating from it like you'd expect to see INSIDE the egg while candling at day 7. Think its safe to say thats one dead egg.

Oh, odd. I'm sorry that it didn't make it.

Definitely update with what you find. I was glad I did my eggtopsy.

I got 4 Black Copper Marans to hatch out of 10. Some of them didn't develop, some were completely scrambled from there trip here - all that developed hatched. Set them the 8th and 10th. Last one, little one to hatch has a slight toe problem, so I'm going to have to do a little splinting

We too cracked open the last egg this morning. Our findings were similar to yours, Bantam Username, but it was a dark chick. We didn't take any pictures before disposing of it. It looked to be fully developed. Why didn't it pip? As far as I know the hen was diligent sitting on it; it never got cold. There were no cracks in the egg. Today was day 27. It wouldn't be so bad if we had put more eggs under her and she had some live chicks.

I feel bad for the broody hen. We've put her in a dog cage. Replaced the bottom tray with hardware cloth and placed it on cinder blocks. There is only food and water in there . She's lost a lot of weight and when we took her out of the brood box each day, she just fluffed up and clucked. The rest of the flock didn't react well and I don't think we ever had her out of 10 minutes. Hopefully she returns to normal soon and we can re-introduce her to the flock without incident.

I have my broody in jail now too. Food and water only, no nest. Next broody only gets a few eggs. Thanks FarmerJohn for the eggs, it was a bummer it just did not work out with my bad broody. Oh well there is always a next time.

It was fun watching everyones eggs hatch.

Mine didn't pip because it didn't turn round to the air sac, it broke the membrane to breathe, then couldn't because the air sac was by its butt not by its head so it didn't get the oxygen it needed to pip.

I'm so sorry that she didn't hatch, Bantam. She looks perfect.

I blocked my broody hen's favorite nest spot. She's been up and about a bit, but I caught her sitting in another box, so I blocked it too.

I keep offering treats to the chickens, and she comes out for that.

So, I guess she's half broody?
