Have to get rabies shots

Quote:
A fellow teacher had a bat in her house last fall and their doctor suggested that they get the rabies shots. I think they went through 3 or 4 Courses of the shots over a 4 or 5 month period. No side effects, though and I think she likened it to a tetanus shot.

Good Luck and sorry for your loss

I just watched Old Yeller and Call of the Wild so here goes.

A. Lock yourself in the barn with no way of letting yourself out, if you start foaming at the mouth, sorry to say but you are a goner.

B. Seek out a Indian Medicine Man have him call out the spirits and they will take the bad rabies away for you, no questions asked, and when you wake up you will be sore, but will have no ill effects.

I think I would take plan B, but the choice is up to you.

They're not terrible at all--- kind of like getting a TB test-- not like the old shots at all. The color of the shots is a pinkish/purple ( or they were when I used to give them), and nothing to worry about!!!

I am SO sorry that you have had to lose your turkeys.

I am SO sorry that you are going to have to go through the shots (even if they aren't as painful as the old days) - -- it is still painful and costs you $$$$.

I think that the suggestion to contact your primary physician is a good idea. He/She may be able to tell you where you can get this shots cheaply. They also may be able to test you so that you only have to take a shot or two.

I HOPE and PRAY that this does not derail your Christmas!!!

I hope that everything goes well. I can only imagine how frightening this must be.

I don’t know much about rabies other than what I have read. I am a bit confused as to why you would need shots at all. Who told you that you needed them but did not inform you about them and direct you to where to get them or have it available. Did you disinfect the wound (of the turkey)? Were you wearing gloves? Did you and the doctor puncture yourselves or have open wounds? Why would a doctor not be aware of such a danger? I would imagine that the vaccine itself would not be without risk (however minute), perhaps more of a risk to your health than your level of exposure? I would definitely get a second opinion immediately (I hope that you have already)!

I don’t mean to sound critical, just trying to understand.

of luck to you! Let us know what happens.

I work at a local hospital, FYI I am not a nurse ! The hospital pharmacy can get the rabies vac. We just need to make sure the pharmacy will have it on hand when we schedule the patient. The only problem that occurs occasionally is that the department that gives the injections is closed on the weekends. So for the doses that are due on a Sat or Sun, the patients have to get the inj in the emergency department! Hope everything goes smoothly for you.

I'm curious as to who's telling you that you must get shots for third party rabies exposure?

The turkey would have to be drowning in the fox saliva and you would have to have open wounds all over your arms to start worrying about it. Plus, a rabid fox would have very little interest in attacking a full grown turkey or 2.

Also, is the doctor going to ask you to pay for his shots? 5 weeks at 3 shots a week at $1500 a shot isn't cheap.

As to get the initial series of shots, you'd have to go to the nearest major Emergency Room for that, and hopefully they might have some current vaccine in stock.

Truthfully to me, it sounds like a hypochondriac is giving you medical advice and making you worry for nothing.

My uncle had to get rabies shots. He said it didn't really hurt anymore. It used to in the old days, but now it's much easier.

I'm thinking about getting immunized, so that if I ever get bitten, I only have to take one shot.
