Have you ever had a nice rooster?

I've ONLY ever had nice roosters, and I've probably had over 20 over the years. I was very surprised when I first came here (and the chicken part of the internet in general) how much hate roosters got, that they were mean and nasty and needed to be kept in place.

The behaviour of the rooster is from nature different than the hen, so they can't be expected to act like something they're not. It's their job to protect the hens, mate with them, help them find feed and be impressive towards "enemy" roosters. So naturally they can be (especially lighter breeds) more energetic and feisty than the hens. It's their personality.
In my eye, roosters are delightful, beautiful creatures! But that's just my opinion of course.

I had a nice rooster once, but I think it was only because He was new to the flock and not yet fully grown. Yes, that is also how he died. Stupid, I know. He was my little dude, The only one who loved me.:hit

He loved to cuddle, Play, and He would even hide behind me whenever I came in the coop.

Pets die sometimes, It's just part of raising them. We don't have to like it, but we should do all we can to protect them!

In my new experience with Roos I have had one of each. I had a Golden Laced Wyndotte Roo, gorgeous as ever. He started to get mean, so we had to put him down. His replacement, a Brahma Roo, is doing great. A little bit of a "horn-dog" as most of my flock of 20 hens are bare backed and are wearing "coats" now. Other than that, he does his job well, and doesn't seem to pose any type of threat.

I've had good ones and I've had good chicken and dumplings.

My current main man is the GCM in my avatar. He was brought in with his two hens to a flock that was 4 Juvie BLRW, one of which is a roo. But, poor JR Roo got demoted before he ever got to the top. Even the GCM hens run him around, Sr Roo never has to do anything lol. But Sr Roo is very good with the bitties, he just kind of ignores them, even when they are under his feet. His hens are another matter though, they are just bossy.
