Have you ever had this happen?? Such a dumb accident :-/

Sorry for your loss. Last night when I changed my chicken's crate and a female got out and in a panic she keeped running into a wall! Seems like they like walls:idunno

First of all, sorry about your roo. A few weeks ago the day after I moved my 5wk old RIR's to the coop one of the pullets flew into the coop wall and did the same thing. I was outside the coop raking when I heard a thud on the wall followed by the ungodliest screaming I'd ever heard. I went inside to find my favorite pullet lying in the floor of the coop thrashing around with a limp neck. I had to cull her due to the suffering. I really miss the little pullet. She was the one I could put on my shoulder while doing chores and feeding up.

yep...my hens were getting old enough to lay, the roos were beginning to compete for breeding rights so it was time to pull the extra roos and put them in the roo pen...the day before I was going to round them up, one of the large Black Astralorp roos was after an EE roo...the EE flew into the wall and fell dead as a stone at my feet...he was gorgeous but he made a great pot of soup...I had intended to keep him...Steven, the BA roo, ended up being a horrible rooster...mean with no back off or quit with the chasing and flogging of any human who entered his domain...he made good soup too...I am sorry for your loss...you rooster was very pretty...

Thanks guys... At least I know I'm not alone

I was thinking this dumb stuff only happens to me! I guess short of padding the walls with foam, there isn't really anything I can do. He'll be missed, but I know he's in chicky heaven enjoying 24/7 sunshine and warm weather with lots of yummy bugs and grass to eat

So sorry for your loss, freak accidents do happen, I had one a few years ago, git caught in some field wire and was hanging upside down dead

I am sorry for your loss. I have a mixed pet area and it is impossible to keep things from happening all the time. For the most part the strong or maybe just lucky, survive. No matter what, a loss is incredibly sad. Some examples are like that my Llama has accidently stepped on a couple of chickens....and I actually shut the lid on a feed barrel and didnt know my Special Needs hen Bloodhead was inside - she ate herself to death, no kidding! Literally stuffed herself stupid and croaked. One close encounter happened when my Black Copper Marans, BC, was a youngster - for some reason I wandered out to the coop at about 11:30 at night...and there he was hanging from a hook on one of the roosts. His Legband had caught on it, and he was suspended in the air, just looking at me??? I dont think he would have been okay upside down all night. And Tubby, my now indoor rooster, got his name from falling in the water tub, twice, as a chick. He's actually not smart enough to live outdoors.

So, the unexpected will happen. We have had heavy losses from predators (hopefully reinforced enough now) and worse, from my own dog (she's gone now)....I hope to be able to settle down with the plans I have for my flock, for pretty eggs, and breeding projects....but losses happen. Running into walls, falling in water tubs, getting stuck in places....what are these chickens thinking??? But you gotta love em!! Aren't they great?

Hope you feel better, your rooster was a beauty! I can tell you cared for him a lot. Thank you for sharing his story.

I had a hen whack her head flying in to something in the coop. I brought her inside after several days because she was still sitting there with her head tucked. After a few weeks I put an extra roo that was very nice in with her for company. It was months later before one day she was suddenly walking around normal again.
